West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice on Monday approved the termination of dozens of Corrections Academy trainees seen in a photograph appearing to give a Nazi salute.

The photograph, released publicly earlier this month by the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, showed more than 30 trainees from Basic Training Class 18 with their arms raised in a salute. The caption “Hail Byrd!” – a reference to the trainees’ instructor – is visible above the group.

An instructor made them greet her like that or face punishment while in the academy. Most of them are 19-21 year old kids

That's speculation. What isn't is that once that pic got in the wild each of the COs brought a stigma into the prison and possibly a violent response. They had to go.

Its still amazing to me that people fail to think of the optics in this day and age. I'm sorry but if these cadets can't think critically and decide for themselves if doing this was a good idea, then good firing.

I can see some stupid joking around in front of the camera. Not excusing the inappropriateness of the salute. But WTF was the photographer and printer thinking to use THAT photo?! Any manager approve its publishing? You sure as hell don’t need to click the shutter when stupid is happening. And NFW should you be printing something like that for public distribution. A lot of more senior PD staff should be canned before the cadets.
