The F-86 is the most handsome jet fighter ever built. The F-117? Seriously? The only reason it flies is because it is so ugly the Earth repels it. |

Gripen
Draken Viggen F-108 F-106 I'm a sucker for deltas... similarly for bombers its B-70, B-58, B-1A, and Vulcan But I do think the Su-27 is a gorgeous design. |

F-15 with the conformal fuel tanks makes me tingly.
F-4 F-14 and f-16 tied for 3rd And the Tornado for 4th. Some of the Russian jets aren't too hard on the eyes either. |

For me, the best looking attack aircraft is the one that carries a shit load of bombs, puts them on target, has a long reach, and is cheap to build a shit load of them. I bring you the A-7

View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted: Quoted: The ugly of an F-18 is through and through. The beauty of fighter airplanes is divided into two camps. The first group consists of airplanes with that racy, thoroughbred look; F-16's, F-5's, one or two Russian airplanes, and others in their time such as the F-86 and F-104. The other group of airplanes may not be the prettiest in a low pass, but they have the broad shoulders, two powerful engines, long legs, and announce to the world that, "I'm the boss. 'Round here, and over at your place." F-15's and F-22's live here. I've always been fond of the legacy hornets. Admittedly, they fall into a third category for me, the same one as a dirty stripper with too much ink. In 1976 I probably thought the YF-17 and F-18 looked pretty cool. Pat Henry, a McDonnell Aircraft experimental flight test pilot, gave me a nice walk around of the YF-17 on the ramp at Langley AFB one afternoon. I'm not certain I ever had a high opinion of the F-18. I remember the early work to sort out the noodly wings; a few of the designers on the F-15 program were tasked with layout of new wings with as much torsional stiffness as could be added. Not long after it became clear the control surfaces would need to be programmed to make the airplane viable. Then in the late 80's, the Swiss wanted 9g airplane that caused another round of analysis. Later when Navy interference escalated, I lost any interest and wanted nothing to do with the F-18. Unfortunately I didn't escape long enough. I guess there is a degree of fascination of watching trainwrecks, airplane programs or strippers. |

I've always thought that the JAS-39 Gripen was one of the coolest looking fighter aircraft ever.

Boeing should be thankful every day that LM won. The PWSC would have been a failure without a major (complete) redesign, the airframe had no chance of success. The reason for the gaping inlet would have caused major functional problems that I won't discuss. The forebody was too short, the weapons bay doors were too long and the bays too shallow, the engine bay doors were an amazing failure of maintainability considerations, and on and on. Most likely the program would have been cancelled when there was no choice but to admit the airplane was a failure. |

Honestly the su27 and dassault rafale are both very good looking fighter jets.
But my favorite is the f4 phantom. |

For me it's a tossup between the F-14 and the F-22. Very different looks but both beautiful planes.
If you include propeller aircraft it'd be much more difficult. So many great looking planes. |
