Dang, that really bumps up the bolt thrust on that old rifle. Has this been researched for safety?

Given the different areas of each caliber .0745 sq in for the .30 and .1647 sq in for the .458, that is 2.2 times the effective pressure on the bolt, if the cartridges are of the same sammi pressure limit.

Bad math...   The force on the bolt is determined by the area of the base of the cartridge.  The bolt doesn't know or care about bore diameter.  So:

.30-06 case is .471 base dia. = .174in^2

.458 case is .513 base dia. = .206 in^2

An increase of 18% going to the .458.  Assuming the original engineers designed the bolt with a healthy safety factor of 3 or more 18% isn't that big a deal.

I was at the range one day and a guy had a Krieghoff double rifle in .450/400 Nitro Express that he was sighting in for a safari in Africa.  He let me put a couple of rounds through it.  For dangerous I think I would rather have a good bolt action in something like .416 Rigby, but it was pretty darn cool.

There is no game in North American that an .06 can't take down. I'm not against people using anything bigger, just stating that my Tikka M695 in .06 will take any game I desire. So I see no need to move up to anything bigger.

what is your definition of a "sporting rifle"?

Something of a classic design, made with the entent to harvest game.

I know a bunch of guys who buy some kind of "going to africa" or "shooting a polar bear" rifle and never do anything with it. If I was just going to own rifles to hunt I doubt I would bother with anything bigger than 308 unless I was making a special trip, THEN I would buy a dangerous game rifle. I just do not see the appeal, to each their own.

I filled that fantasy purchase with my bargain Mannlicher.  It has that Old Country look I always wanted, but a caliber which is prudent for North America.  It is my primary hunting rifle, but one that I love pulling out of the safe to show off.

I have .338 Win Mag. In a sporting Rifle. Anything in .338 is very good all around cartridge. Should be able to take any game on planet with correct placement. Maybe only 2-3 critters where a .416 may be of advantage and really not all that much. Guides would bitch if you tried to hunt with .338 for those few but you can certainly do it.

Just plain fun. Money no object. .50BMG in Semi-Auto.

this

there is a quantity used to measure recoil called "free recoil energy"

basically, it's just the amount of energy that the rifle would have if it was free to recoil backwards, just like the bullet going one way and the rifle going the other

the free recoil energy is the amount of energy your shoulder has to soak up to stop the rifle

the reason the 30-06 has been so popular for so long is that a hunting weight 30-06 firing a 150 grain bullet develops about 17.5 ft-lbs of free recoil energy

any gun that develops more than about 20 ft-lbs will be uncomfortable for most shooters, make them flinch

those elephant killer type 45-70 loads with 350 and 400 grain bullets will generate free recoil energy of almost 50 ft-lbs.

barrel porting and using a muzzle brake will reduce recoil by a large amount but then you have increased muzzle blast.   If you ever shot a heavy 357 mag load out of a 4 inch barrel and then tried the same load in a 6' barrel you will know the difference that muzzle blast can make

I always look at this from the perspective of passing the "paper plate test" at 25 yards with a handgun and 100 yards with a rifle.  If you cannot pass the paper plate test with 5 shots, you're basically just wasting your time and money.

Probably you wouldn't want a .585 Nyati, then.

actually, i like weird guns, but i know that I would get sick and tired of sliding those $10 artillery shells into the gun and getting knocked down

I'd try to convince myself that it was fun for  a few months, then it would sit in the safe for a year and then get sold

a lot of you guys are still in the "buy more guns" frame of mind

but after you hit the saturation point, you find yourself with a gun safe jammed full of guns

and you pick the same four or five guns to shoot week in and week out while all the 'neato" guns sit unused

Basically, that and it is probably one of the more thrilling and dangerous hunts in the world. Almost all tuskless elephants are cows. Not only are they protective of their own offspring, but of the rest of the young in the herd and are generally considered to be more temperamental than bulls. This means you have to go into the cow herds to ID a cow w/o a calf, understanding that all of the cows will be aggressive. Then you must shoot & scoot (being sure not to hit the wrong cow) all without getting stomped in the process. Yeah, you'll have a story to tell for sure!
