I'm not going bear hunting, I'm just messing around.
But here is parameter of my question. Start with the calibers that are perfectly fine for brown bears. But available in a semi-auto rifle. And of the available semi-auto calibers which one could also be pressed into service for longer shots on lighter game. Same caliber, longer range bullet, as accurate as possible. If there is a 375 H&H in semi auto then that is probably the one, but I strongly doubt there is one available. And the rifle should be reasonably reliable for obvious reasons. I don't even know if such a rifle is available. Extra points for detachable box magazine. |

A .308 AR10 will do the job if you insist on a semi auto...
Personally I'd recommend an elephant gun...one shot, one kill. |

Nemo Omen 458 Winchester mag:
https://youtu.be/QcnoFE7Dc68 I bet if one were really serious, Falkor could throw together a 375 for you. The Bighorn 500 automax would be easier to lay hands on and it's plenty of gun too. |

I’d rather be able to put a lot of decent rounds on target quickly if your talking about self defense from bears and not hunting.
Give me some decently hot .308 in a 20rd mag from a 16” AR10 with a decent quick acquisition optic. |
|
Garand in 9.3x62, maybe. .338-06 or .35 Whelen, or something like at, with appropriate RN solids, could work, too, although I've only seen the first one.

View Quote I've got a .416 rem mag that was put together for a brown bear guide in alaska. But it is a bolt gun. I am very highly confident the fast .400 grain bullets would smash up stuff. But, it's a bolt gun. Loaded down it is my go-to gun. But it will definitely fix problems with elephant bullets. You really think a .308 is perfectly adequate for brown bear? I have no idea. I just like to err on the side of caution. It's why I bought the .416 rem. |

12 gauge slugs, gets the job done.
Or you could hire this guy.... KARATE BEAR |

An M107A1 chambered in Barrett 416 could kill anything in North America you could lay eyes on. But that’s a heavy rifle.
Depending on your definition of longer shots on lighter game, a realistic candidate would be an AR10 in 45 Raptor or one of the 338Lapua AR-variants. |

For bear defense, unless the bear is attacking someone else, anything over 100yds and you're going to have some explaining to do. 50yds to 100yds depend on who's writing the report.

Someone here said their Alaska city pd has .450BM ARs in their cars. I don't think there's a lot of hardcast ammo in that round but maybe that doesn't matter. I saw a video a while back young hunter DRTing a grizzly with a hollow point .50B. |

Likely a Barrett 338lm, most reliable S/A rifle you will find..RND did build some 300 rum semi autos, they were supposed to be bad ass, but they have shut down as far as I can tell..
this is an RND 300Rum.... Attached File Most likely you would be better off building a nice bolt action rifle and practice on it.. My hunting rifle, Tenacity action, MPA chassis, bartlein barrel chambered in 300rum.. Attached File |

For me it would be a .308 on the low end. Good thing its a semi so at least you'll have a few followups if you need them.
The bigger the better if you're talking about a one shot stop. |

A .308 should do just fine. It’s a Bear, not a Cape Buffalo. A single.308 should have no problem killing one, and a mag dump of 5+ rounds should drop any bear on Earth. It’s not the best, but I would figure adequate.
I would be curious what a 5.56 would do. A string of fire, I would assume, would kill a bear just fine as well. Personally, my Beretta 1301 with slugs would be my choice in bear country. Light weight, fast, easy to put a lot of slugs down range. |
|
Defensive use, meaning something easy to manipulate but still packs enough punch to put down a big brown, .458 SOCOM/.450BM/.350 Legend/12GA. Any of those with a decent projectile would put serious hurt on any bear while being lightweight and easy to get on target quickly.
A .308-size AR would work well too, if set up correctly. .308/.375 Raptor/.338 Federal/etc. would do just fine. The guys posting semi auto .300/.338 Magnums and such... sure, for hunting while stationary. I'd much rather pack my lightweight .458 SOCOM. |
|
Any .308 loaded with a sturdy bullet will kill a brown or polar bear. I’d do 180 grain Barnes. Plenty of penetration, good expansion.
.30-06 is better. 300 Win also. But .308 would get the job done. |

Semi 308 can be had much cheaper than any 45-70 these days. Until ruger ramps up production, lever guns are going to be priced at ridiculously inflated levels.

For the brownies around me I carry a ar-15.
Other wise it is ak or 45/70. Kodiak and the big kenai brownies 338wm-45-70. |

Barrett 50BMG obviously, haha
But yeah at minimum a 308 like an AR-10. I mean 25rd mags and just unload on the beast!! Maybe a Garand 30-06 or BAR 30-06 |
