To stop it, you need to break a shoulder because that's where its strength and speed reside. Killing a bear can take time, because sometimes the bear doesn't yet know that you have killed it. |

308 loaded with 220 grain round nose. You can get those up to about 2400 feet per second and change in a 308. That should be plenty to drill a good sized hole through several feet of bear, and light enough recoil you could stay on target somewhat reasonably while mag dumping. 458 SOCOM with them Barnes TTSX would do the same deal.

I built my SBS Tac13 to run the Brenneke black magic. That being said, I'd like to build a Garand in .338-06, but it wouldn't be the most fun thing to carry around hunting. Maybe a short one?

458 Socom does a good job on NC Black bears... some of them get pretty big.. I have been really happy with mine!

A Browning BAR is exactly what you are looking for. I have no idea if a complete list of calibers that they were chambered in is out there but it's a big list. The 338 Win Mag is the biggest caliber I see commonly and is the route I would go. Lots of versatility with the 338. Apparently some covert them to 458 Win Mag and 416 Taylor which is enough horsepower for anyone.

A Shuff’s 16.1” Mini-G in .35 Whelen.
Tim builds them with Criterion M1-profile barrels in .35W, and they can run either the 5-rd “hunting” clips or the 8-rd GI clips. Several of his Alaskan clients use them as bear defense carbines or when hunting them and moose in thick timber or brushy areas. Here’s what one of his Anchorage-based clients said: Tim Shufflin of Shuff's Parkerizing returned my completed M1 Garand Mini G chambered in .35 Whelen to me this week. The 24" barrel was shortened to 16" and rebored to .35 Whelen. He milled out the ridges in the receiver legs so that a full 8-round Enbloc clip of .35 Whelen ammo could be used (a special request from me -- and the first time that he had done so). The rifle was re parkerized and resides in a new Boyd's walnut stock. Tim installed the Ultimak scout rail in place of the front handguard. I installed a Hi-Lux 2-7x32mm extended eye relief scope on see through rings. This new Mini G will serve as a brush gun up here in the Last Frontier. 8 rounds of .35 Whelen in Hornady Superformance Ammunition with a 200gr bullet traveling at 2920 fps will be bear-worthy for Alaska. Either a Browning BAR or Benelli R1 in .338WM or .300WM. I used to have the Benelli in .338. Never hunted bear though, it was a "just because" gun. It was nice and lightweight and shot plenty well. Recoil was very manageable. I only sold it because it didn't do anything my .375 Ruger couldn't do better.
