What infantry unit is more elite? The 82nd Airborne or the First Marine Division?

Kind of apples and oranges.  You would drop the 82nd to seize an objective.  You would land 1st MarDiv to seize a country.

Neither is elite.

1st Marine Division are legs

82nd are legs that waste a good chunk of their training time on something they'll never use in combat.

Both are just grunt line units.

They both are elite units and it is hard to quantify

Having said that army units who have worked with both would rather work with the Marines.

The Marines treated them fairly while the 82nd treated them with disdain.   There is a lot of issues in the army in the way units are treated amongst themselves to include guard and reserve units.

I saw it first hand in the 21 years I spent in the army and guard.

Attended jump school with ANGLICO in my company. Also USMC beach logistics battalions or whatever they’re called have Marines on jump status I believe. Of course the Recon, MARSOC but I have no clue for scout sniper? Marines are undergoing training at Yuma too.

What is the largest sized USMC unit that jumps? A bunch of foreign countries have division but not the airlift to actually deploy them in airborne operations. China is investing in airlift capabilities for their jump status units.

Go look up what the did.   They would fly at tree top hight and pull straight up vertical until the were at jump height kick the guys out the back and then dive down.  They'd do that in a bunch of spots so radar wouldn't know which spot had the paratroopers.

Even in WW2 they only had a couple rgts capable. I doubt very much they can jump in with anything bigger than a company.

If it means anything a decent looking chick picked me wearing an RDF t shirt over a USMC wearing his blues in Washington DC back in the 80s. I believe he was newly assigned to Lejeune and I was 2 years in at Ft Bragg and home on leave.

There are probably only 1500 active Marines world wide that jump.

In all honesty,
If you were to grab a standard line battalion of Infantryman from each,
The quality density would be very similar.

18th Abn Corps cut their brigades like 525 military intelligence, 18th field artillery brigade, 20th engineer brigade, 16th Military Police brigade etc. down to only 1 battalion on jump status for each. Other than the 82nd Div, we got 173rd and 2nd brigade 11th Airborne which was going to be deactivated 10 years ago but held on.Attachment Attached File

No because they can put an entire Brigade in your back yard in a matter of hours, not just the infantry Battalions, the entire goddamn Brigade soup to nuts.  It's a shame that the 82nd has practiced doing that ad-infinitum for decades but has not performed the trick for the world to see, it's fucking impressive as hell.

I have a good friend that was in an “airborne” unit and was surprised to learn that only about half of them actually jumped. How many in the 82nd are on jump status?

Also yes an apples to oranges and airborne likes to tout that they can be anywhere within some many hours, but the Marines are always forward deployed somewhere. Supporting assets are completely different and missions aren’t the same.

What has the 82nd done post 1945?

82nd Airborne and Marine Infantry are pretty close in attitudes…..when I was a rookie street cop, I was tossed in the ghetto, one man cars, and my classmate, who was 82nd, was in the adjacent ghetto over. No one wanted to work in the ghetto, but we did, and we made the job fun.

We never had to wonder if we had each other’s back, we could smoke and joke, and had each other’s back in IA……

I went to the Feds, he went to the Highway Patrol, and then went to Blackwater….
