On 13 September 1985, Maj. Wilbert D. "Doug" Pearson, flying the "Celestial Eagle" F-15A 76-0084 launched an ASM-135 ASAT about 200 miles (322 km) west of Vandenberg Air Force Base and destroyed the Solwind P78-1 satellite flying at an altitude of 345 miles (555 km). Prior to the launch, the F-15 - flying at Mach 1.22 - executed a 3.8g zoom climb at an angle of 65 degrees. The ASM-135 ASAT was automatically launched at 38,100 ft while the F-15 was flying at Mach .934. The 30 lb (13.6 kg) MHV collided with the 2,000 lb (907 kg) Solwind P78-1 satellite at closing velocity of 15,000 mph (24,140 km/h).[10]

Speaking of the F-15EX (they really need a new designation), we should buy enough of them to not only replace the F-15C/D fleet but also replace the entire F-15E fleet while we're at it.  Save a bunch of money by buying in bulk plus by the time the last C/D replacements role off the line the E fleet will need replacing

untrue

The C model could drop bombs and was originally wired for it.

The 462 in me remembers but the 2W1 won't believe it and the 2A3 ignores it all and pumps gas through a single point.

The "not a pound for air-to-ground" is a BS myth. C models had the capability from day one and pilots actually trained and practiced dropping bombs.

And the IDF actually used C/D models to attack ground targets in the '80s.

The new F15EX looks pretty awesome.

Basically a supersonic mini bomber that can also dogfight.

Can carry something like 22 AA missiles, or 28 Small Diameter B's. Also can carry several long range standoff cruise missiles, and will likely end up a test bed for future hypersonic missiles.

Its also got a much longer combat radius then the F35. So F15EX's based in Australia and Guam could put standoff anti ship cruise missiles into the SCS on short notice (now just to get them based there.)

There was a knock down, drag out fight at TAC Hq back in the early 1980s about putting the GAU-8 into the design requirements for what ended up as the F-22.  Smart people were putting forth good reasons for the BFG  to be in the plane (Out range everything else with a gun that flew was a big point).

But the weight and size of the 30mm was its own downfall and the 20mm was used.  I'm pretty sure that episode drove the development of the 25mm the F-35 got.

Something I hadn't realized before, the F15's 20mm is a Vulcan gatling gun, with a 6,000rpm rate of fire an 500rd magazine. Thats 100 shots a second, 2x the rate of fire of the Minigun or A10 warthog.

Heres the same 20mm, but on a F18, conducting an air strike on the Taliban. Its less BRRRRRT and more BRT! because that 6000rpm puts a 50rd burst on target in 0.5 seconds.
