It's more about the filmography, soundtrack connected with Gay Ellis's skirt than anything else, right?

Rendezvous with Rama is a novel by Arthur C. Clarke first published in 1972. Set in the 22nd century, the story involves a 50-kilometre (31 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters Earth's solar system. The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers, who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries.

This novel won both the Hugo[3] and Nebula[4] awards upon its release, and is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones in Clarke's bibliography. It is considered a science fiction classic, and is particularly seen as a key hard science fiction text.

But A and B.

A: I was a child then and did not read such things.

B: The way this Rama is described, it is hardly a combat vessel.

They manually pull the gun into position with ropes? Why not just automate that? You'd need far fewer crew.

This may be illuminating:

"Strike the first rune upon the engine's casing employing the chosen wrench. Its tip should be anointed with the oil of engineering using the proper incantation when the auspices are correct. Strike the second rune upon the engine's casing employing the arc-tip of the power-driver. If the second rune is not good, a third rune may be struck in like manner to the first. This is done according to the true ritual laid down by Scotti the Enginseer. A libation should be offered. If this sequence is properly observed the engines may be brought to full activation by depressing the large panel marked 'ON'." - An Introduction; Naval Flight Manual W110E

The Imperium has largely forgotten the scientific knowledge necessary to understand how all their equipment works, and now simply does things by rote, and ensconces the entire process in mysticism.  Besides, automatic loaders are probably heresy.

Ahh, that makes sense now. So the guns may very well have had autoloaders centuries ago but those systems are now broken or rusted up and nobody knows how to fix them. I'm guessing these ships are slowly decaying.

If it's an older ship, yeah.

They do build new ships but they are nowhere near as advanced as their older ships. They're so obsessed with reacquiring knowledge from the past that any new innovations are considered heresy.

Perhaps in time the Machine Spirits can be appeased and life restored to your autoloaders.  If the proper offerings are made and rituals observed...and the Omnissiah wills it of course.

The Ciaphas Cain series is where i started. It's pretty hilarious and kind of atypical of 40k. It's written in the style of an autobiography and has pretty helpful/funny footnotes. It follows the adventures of a cowardly commissar who despite doing all he can to avoid danger develops a reputation for bravery.
The Horus Heresy series would also be a good place to start. It's set during the civil war that left the empire in the state of stagnation it's in during 40k.
The Space Wolf series is a good starter for space marine novels. It basically follows a recruit from his initiation all the way to becoming a company commander.
ETA: and here's a good info source if you're like me and stop in the middle of a paragraph to look stuff up.

The beauty of the Warhammer books is you don't have to start at any one place. It's a multitude of authors that write stories about different people, units, and campaigns within the empire. Sort of like the Star Wars novels that cover the time befor and after the movies, they just kind of jump around.

If you just want some senseless violence and fun Sci-fi reading, start out with any book about the Space Marines. They pretty much just travel the Universe fucking shit up for the God Emperor. I also like the Gaunts Ghosts series, for much the same reason.

They are a very dark, almost depressing type of Sci-fi but very fast reading and not too intellectual. Pretty much on the opposite spectrum of Sci-fi as Enders Game but still well written enough to keep your attention.

Various quotes & fluff

Once you have at least some idea what the heck is going on, check out 'Xenology', 'The Imperial Infantryman's Uplifting Primer' and the Eisenhorn series.  Also, the rulebooks and codexes for the tabletop game tend to have a decent bit of space devoted to short stories and fluff.  These can all be easily *ahem* acquired in pdf form.

Also, tl;dr:
