While not the coolest looking ship (in fact it's rather clunky) I've had a fondness for the Ambassador-class ever since the TNG episode "Yesterday's Enterprise".

The cover gives it away, but this thing was so drably utilitarian and so freakishly overpowered that it alone was considered sufficient to carry the most important entity alive in a universe that had been at war at least since Earth coalesced

I know what that one is Wyzardd, unfortunately, it's not very 'cool looking'.

Darn....that's distressing.

When I first started writing science fiction, my capital ships were 1000 meters to a mile long and their motherships were 10X that. Of course, that was the 70's and all the public had were imperial star destroyers and Close Encounters of the Absurd Kind motherships. Sure, there were also space cities and things like V'ger, but they weren't really ships to tangle with.

Now, everything is HUGE and if you want to make a point, you have to be bigger than what was big yesterday....and it just keeps getting bigger and bigger.

To be fair, Imperial Navy ships need to be that big.  All them gun ratings have to have room to live.

They manually pull the gun into position with ropes? Why not just automate that? You'd need far fewer crew.

This may be illuminating:

"Strike the first rune upon the engine's casing employing the chosen wrench. Its tip should be anointed with the oil of engineering using the proper incantation when the auspices are correct. Strike the second rune upon the engine's casing employing the arc-tip of the power-driver. If the second rune is not good, a third rune may be struck in like manner to the first. This is done according to the true ritual laid down by Scotti the Enginseer. A libation should be offered. If this sequence is properly observed the engines may be brought to full activation by depressing the large panel marked 'ON'." - An Introduction; Naval Flight Manual W110E

The Imperium has largely forgotten the scientific knowledge necessary to understand how all their equipment works, and now simply does things by rote, and ensconces the entire process in mysticism.  Besides, automatic loaders are probably heresy.

Ahh, that makes sense now. So the guns may very well have had autoloaders centuries ago but those systems are now broken or rusted up and nobody knows how to fix them. I'm guessing these ships are slowly decaying.

Sadly, no, heh.

Although Last Exile is as close as I've seen.  It's quite different, sharing only the idea of floating battleships.  Great show, though.

As for Space: 1889, one thing they did release was a series of hour long radio plays.  The first one was actually good, and the rest varied.  Interesting listen on very long drives.

Berserkers date to the mid 60's.

Ringworld was published in 1970.

Traveller came out in 1977, and has some massive boats, ships, carriers, and tenders.

I do not know these books. As a child, I was reading Andre Norton, "John Carter of Mars", E.E. "Doc" Smith, "Men, Martians, and Machines" and Jack Willamson.

I knew what I saw in the movies.

Now one might say, "Well, you should read them!" and that might perhaps be correct......but we are talking about the mid 70's when I had not read such and had started writing.

I too will have to cast my vote for the Normandy SR2.  The SR1 was nice, but adding EDI and the upgrades to the shields, weapons and hull gave the SR2 an advantage.

It should surprise no one that I can't think of a single Star Trek Federation ship that I like. They are looking a little better than originally, but not much.

Norway and Prometheus aren't too bad, I guess. Better than the traditional Enterprise configuration

(Hopefully neither site has blocked hotlinking, I don't want to contaminate my albums with Trekkie stuff )

The Imperial Class Star Destroyers are, I think, about the sweetest large craft around. Since the Rebellion has such a hodge-podge of craft, none really stands out as iconic to me. Excluding fighters, of course. Going just on looks, I think the Y-Wing is the best looking of their small ships. Kind of has a dragonesque look from certain angles.

BSG, old and new, was chock-full of cool shit. Couldn't pick just a couple. I like the old Cylon Raiders better than new (new ones look like they tried too hard), all the Vipers are good looking, no Battlestar looks less than badass ... Ok, a lot of the transports in the ragtag fleet are junk, but that was intentional.

Rendezvous with Rama is a novel by Arthur C. Clarke first published in 1972. Set in the 22nd century, the story involves a 50-kilometre (31 mi) cylindrical alien starship that enters Earth's solar system.
The story is told from the point of view of a group of human explorers,
who intercept the ship in an attempt to unlock its mysteries.

This novel won both the Hugo[3] and Nebula[4] awards upon its release, and is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones in Clarke's bibliography. It is considered a science fiction classic, and is particularly seen as a key hard science fiction text.

Amazon apparently has a Blu Ray versions of the movie subtitled.
