@BIGSHOOTER414

Where'd you score the SS198LF for the FiveseveN? I see it at nearly $1/rd at this point.

My go-to has always been 147HSTs but lately I've been running Underwood 9MM +P+ 115GR. XTREME PENETRATORs.

The issue is that I'm in the national forest and they take the nuisancer bears from the Smokies and release  them about a.5 miles from my cabin….so asshole bears can be an issue. These Underwoods seem like a good compromise for 2 and 4 leg threats.

124 Gr. +P Gold Dot carried in a CZ P-10C or P07 (4 inch barrel for both).

They work and work well, and I have never had a failure with them in any pistol.

I would feel the same with Federal HST, but I am able to get Gold Dots a lot easier.

Depends.  At work in the work gun--124 grain +P Winchester bonded.  Off with the G43X---147 grain Gold Dots.  If carrying the PP, 73 grain FMJ.  If carrying the S&W 64, which is most common when off, 158 grain +P semi-wadcutter hollowpoints in the weapon and in speed loaders, Winchester 130 grain +P PDX in any speed strips carried.  Same load for the 37-2 when carried as a backup.

Doesn't surprise me, they are probably the most tried and tested self-defense rounds out there, and both are readily available.

My thinking is I could probably optimize by choosing different loads for the different barrel lengths/guns but all handgun rounds suck so it’s probably only a marginal benefit. The drawbacks are having to buy different kinds of expensive carry ammo and having to work up different loads for training analogous. By sticking with one load I bought a whole case of 147gr HSTs so I can shoot a fair amount of it to ensure functionality in any gun I may want to carry or use for home defense and only have to work up one load for practice.

HST 147gr

It's the old lot that still works great out of short barrels, when I rotate this out I'll probably drop to 124gr HST

They both used to work exceedingly well down to 3.1" barrels when tested to FBI standards. There's been talk that the newer batches of 147 HST underperforms in 3.1" barrels due to some changes they made.

I have found that it doesn't really matter. Your practice ammo will be pretty close no matter what weight or brand.

Buy any 147 grain load from a major manufacturer and you'll be fine.

Only problem I've ever had with 147 grain ammo was from Freedom Munitions. It chronographed around 800 fps (some shots less than 800 fps) from a 4" M&P over a Lab Radar. It wouldn't cycle the slide of my M&P, so I asked the guy in the range stall next to me if I could shoot some over his lab radar. It was pathetic. I bitched to Freedom Munitions, and to their credit they allowed me to return the remaining 900ish rounds from the case and gave me a refund.

It’s interesting how many of you use 147 gr 9mm in your carry pistol. I’ve reloaded some for target practice but never for self defense. Not saying it as a negative, I’ve just always carried with 124 grain.
