1.5 million americans served in Vietnam over 15 years. At least half of them are already dead, some of natural causes. 2.5 million people identified as Vietnam vets in the 2010 census, I believe. A lot of those people are probably the same people who burned their draft cards and protested the war.

So, there's that. Stolen valor is a thing, you know.

Off the top of my head 3 million served within the AO that qualified for either the expeditionary medal or CN campaign medal ie waters adjacent Cambodia Laos etc. flight crews etc you all take the stolen valor shit to Speed Tugman level sometimes

I finally told him that he did a helluva job because the swingsets in the park never got attacked while he was in.

There's a lot wrong with this pic.

Firstly, the guy on the right is about to eat a 5.56, and the guy on the left must be from the future as the PASGT helmet wasn't fielded until 1983.

Lastly, that chick is way too hot for a second rate medical intern.

Up here there is a lot of them. The Vietnam Nam ones.

I have not seen one Iraq war veteran hat.

Is that because only Marines would be able to wear them?

What difference does that make? I know a guy who spent most of his enlistment UA. And another who got a psyche discharge for saying nothing but "ham and cheese" for 36 hours.
Now a days, they're the MOST proud on Veterans Day.

I got asked to join VFW by some of their members but I declined, so all I’m aware of that org is a pancake breakfast that I happened upon, all the rumors about bullshit war stories over beers and whatever goes on is not something I’ve personally experienced but supposedly that org lobbies for vets with Congress bills, so more power to em I guess. Only 7% of the public are vets with most being Vietnam or Cold War era now that WW2 and Korea war era have largely passed on and in a place like San Francisco or Lis Angeles I can tell you from personal experience you won’t get thanked for your service, probably your car trashed or spit at {which happened to me parking at the Marine Memorial hotel on Union street}

I love these Navy guys that never stepped one foot in Vietnam claim they are Vietnam Veterans.

Yes, the pilots and rescue operations earned that distinction.

Yes, the men aboard the ships did an outstanding job doing their swabble jobs, however it is stretching it to claim they were "Vietnam Veterans".

I have run across several of them but I never make a deal about it.  Let them have their little military fantasy.

I remember reading about those units.

Ex fil wasn't a member of any such unit. His war stories were about how dangerous Guard training was and how he could have easily been hurt or killed. He was saying this shit to my brother who did 18 months In- Country as Army Infantry.

Many of my brother's friends don't know he served in Vietnam because hes never mentioned it and it's sure as hell not my place to tell them

One of the reasons this whole deal pisses me off so much is because my ex fil is in his upper 70's still in excellent health and struts around like he always has while my brother is being eaten alive by one of the Agent Orange cancers and never takes a pain free step.

Hell I listened to some navy missile repairman who served in the gulf during OIF drone on about how he was a 1 man hero that the pilots depended on to get missiles put on their aircraft a few months ago, the way he told it the entire Navy regrets kicking him out at Lemore NAS and denying his reenlistment but whatever .Mil decrees is the award criteria is who decides not you or me. That’s what valor medals are for, I usually just check for valor awards or the like before my care meter moves very far but if some guy wants to buy a hat or wear a hat I look at the forest for the trees and hope it has a positive impact on a public that’s mostly out of touch with the military it’s pays taxes for. IMO citizenry should be somewhat in touch with .Gov and .Mil given they’re supposed to be serving the public which pays for them. But I’m thinking more on public relations, accountability issues than attention whore, stolen valor that most of GD fixates on

In my experience people like that are generally complete fuckups and/or morons and have some deep seated issues to make everyone *like* them be exaggerating or completely fabricating stuff. Having done a lot with missiles over my career being able to talk to a guy in that MOS (not him) that's not a blowhard like that would actually be interesting to me to learn about what he worked on, issues, etc.

Seems to be plenty of choices on Amazon. I prefer Iraq War Veteran to “Operation Iraqi Freedom Veteran” or any variant of OIF. But I’m going to hold out a few more decades before buying one as I’m in my 40s.

The only military insignia I ever wear are a few custom embroidered OD green or woodland flexfit hats with a subdued black Eagle Globe and Anchor on them. No text. A lot of people don’t know what it is and that suits me just fine.

I think you summed up my brother's point of view very well.

All I really know about his time in comes from the letters he wrote me (I was 5 when he left, 6 when he got home)) he sent me photos of his rifle and him getting ready to go out on patrol that he had a friend take for him. I have no clue if he was awarded any medals.

His wife did tell me that he got spit on in the airport in , I believe, San Francisco.

Because a lot of them that weren’t killed or maimed in Iraq have committed suicide in the years since returning home. The ones that haven’t probably don’t want to talk about it.

3/1 Marines alone have lost nearly 40 veterans of Operation Phantom Fury to suicide.

Give it another 30 years and I’m sure there will be old dudes all over the place wearing GWOT veteran hats. And the majority of them will be veterans who never deployed, or never deployed into actual combat.

View Quote

How do you define this for OIF vets?

For a very large number of guys who deployed there, "combat" consisted of doing mundane stuff when suddenly something exploded, and then you had to figure out if any of your friends died. This was a reality of life both on and off the FOB, and very rarely did you get a chance to shoot back at whoever just tried to kill you.

Those were all US-Army promo pics. Look at the real pics, all are steel pots. I know of one guy that was handed a kevlar to wear so they could take is pic, Once the photo shoot was over, they handed him back his steel pot.

There's multiple photos of PASGT's in use even on the Grenada wiki page...

That’s the nature of modern “wars.”

I do not consider myself a combat vet. I never fired my personal rifle at a human target. I’ve been mortared at an embassy. Shot at by “snipers” for three days in a row before being allowed to direct fire on that position by MGs and TOWs, as a weapons company squad leader. seen friends vehicles blown up by antitank mines while convoying to a new AO.

Have a neighbor whose truck back window looks like a 201 file. All good and I don't fault guys for wearing that stuff but you're not going to see me wearing any of that regalia.

Pretty much the same for me. I’ve worn unit tees or Operation Golden Pheasant tee which I gave to an ex gf to at post gyms on days I got groceries at the commissary or during 4th of July after old timers gave me lectures about clothing and US flag prohibited codes. Back in college I had a 2nd ID sticker on my POV which got trashed by the Berkeley crowd so that was the last time I put anything on my car but surfing ????? related in California. Had an OEF hat and a 10th Mountain hat from my time at Ft Drum but the OEF hat was stolen and I only had the opportunity to wear it once or twice max while I did yard work. I see guys with 4 different kinds of USMC stickers on car windows which to me is a bit over kill or a CIB with jump wings and rank stickers on windows even saw a meritorious service medal sticker lol. More power to em I guess. I’m more into putting stuff from Hawaii or surf stuff although nothing on my current vehicle atm. I did donate and buy an Operation surf tee when I learned about that orgs work with disabled vets but have only worn that tee once to a casual Friday at a previous job.

If you spend your entire career in the same regiment I can definitely see why. The regimental ties are sharp and I got a striped regimental style USMC silk tie custom made in Thailand.
