I'm "fat" because I turned 40 and my metabolism retired

But a bit of a belly and a few extra pounds isn't unusual for most people at some point during their lives.
People who get hundreds of pounds over weight have to be mentally ill.
The time and money involved in consuming that much isn't normal for anyone.

If you made it past 5 life expectancy has always been 70 or so. Society has made massive strides in stopping children from dying of dysentery and keeping unhealthy people alive.

The average person now is probably less healthy than 10000 years ago.

Welllll....

For me, at least, it wasn’t like I woke up one morning and poof!  I was 305 pounds.

It is like hypoxia in a flying type environment.  The Air Force calls it “insidious onset”.

It was going to the doctor’s office and stepping on their scale and actually seeing that 3 as the first number.  That was a slap in the face , wake up call if there ever was one..

Butttt...., there has to be some symptoms or signs these grossly obese people see but CHOOSE to ignore.... “I can’t see my dick any more without the use of a mirror ."  Or “HOLY SHIT!  My skin has another roll in it!"  “I can’t wipe my own ass."

That part where they purposely ignore those signs and keep gorging themselves, now, that has to be a mental illness or addiction.

Every time you spike your blood sugar, the insulin response sends a message to the rest of your body “STORE FAT!  STORE FAT!"

It took a while for me to catch on but forum member frayedknot would always use CICO (calories in versus calories out) as his argument.

For the longest time, I thought that was too simplistic.  But then it hit me:  I reframed his position of CICO to this :  “if you don’t eat it, you don’t have to burn it off.”

I stopped eating Snickers, Paydays, and drinking cokes after my night shifts 3 or 4 times a week.  Those 3 things together are like 1,200 calories.  So there weeks I was ingesting  an extra 4,800 calories.  A pound of fat is supposedly 3,500 calories.

I was 305 pounds in early December.

I cut out the sweets and started doing the Atkins diet.  I weighed 265 on Valentines Day. So 40 pounds lost in 10 weeks.

I never worked out.  My work would have me walking 7 plus miles a shift.

I love the posts in GD where someone talked about quitting sodas and magically dropped 50 pounds. It deflates me because I also stopped sodas, have curtailed my beer drinking, a bag of chips that used to last me 2 days now lasts a week, bread turns green before I finish a loaf, and I’m walking everyday.

I haven’t lost anything.

It’s incredibly disheartening and destroys my motivation.

I did 405 (4 plates on each side) for two or three reps with a trap bar a few years ago once I heard Bradley Cooper talking about a scene he shot in that American Sniper movie.  He said he told the director “Yeah, go ahead and put 400 pounds on the bar.  I can do it!”

It's all of these: Food supply, food education, personal accountability, hormone levels.

The food supply in the US is completely messed up. It's addictive, causes high inflammation, and even impacts hormone levels. Many people like my parents trusted the "approved" food pyramid for decades which is a perfect recipe for obesity and inflammation. Much of the medical community is backwards on this too.

Hormones control everything about your body. Cutting calories only works as long as your metabolism doesn't crash, and your metabolism is dictated by hormones. Some people can get thin just by cutting calories, some people have a metabolism and energy crash before they ever see significant body composition change.

Staying fit and healthy today takes more willpower and effort than it did in our grandparents generation due to our food supply and changing hormone levels. It's also somehow more socially acceptable now to be obese then it was a few decades ago.

I work my ass off to be healthy and stay in shape as a middle-aged dad. Some people have the dedication and willpower currently needed, but it seems more and more people just don't care.

What to do?
Cut out the sugars, seed oils, processed food, and calorie dense drinks (yes even beer). Avoid fast food and the center isles of the grocery. Eat plenty of clean proteins from grass fed chicken/beef/eggs/wild fish. Try Keto if you need to. Use an app to track your calories to make sure you aren't eating much more then you think.

Start lifting weights, don't just grind it out on the stationary bike for hours. Walk more for great low-impact exercise that doesn't stress your central nervous system like intense workouts do.

Get your hormone levels checked including your thyroid. Eat in a way that controls your blood sugar and insulin levels. Get enough sleep and minimize caffeine to keep your cortisol levels under control. Read the articles from Dr. Jade Teta regarding hormones, cortisol, and Hunger/Energy/Cravings (HEC).

Fat people have a self control issues and lack proper motivation.  You could debate all day long as to how they got that way or who hurt them.....but it does nothing to make them lose weight.  I know, they know, they are fat lazy slobs.....but they just don't care enough to do much about it other than complain.  Hard work is, well, hard work.  Most people avoid that.  And now we have the govt and corporations pushing this "fat is beautiful and healthy" shit.  It will only get worse.

You missed the part where I am walking 7 plus more miles at work each shift.

The other thing I did....and the reason I was at the doctor’s office in December is because I wanted a new CPAP machine.  Turns out my old CPAP machine was no longer set right.  As one sleep lab technician told me back in 2012,  “if your sleep is jacked up, you won’t be able lose weight.”

So I am sure sleeping better has helped with the weight loss too.

Thin people are more attractive than heavier people.  They have more opportunities in life.

Fat people are viewed as unattractive, lazy, and slothful.  They have less opportunities in life.

Is it something hard-wired in people that makes them view thin people as attractive?

Is food addictive?  It is hard not to eat a whole bag or chips or candy when you open it.  It is far better to not buy the food and have it around.

Are fat people fat due to no willpower, laziness, disease, or something else?

How can fat people get thin?

More importantly: How can fat people get and REMAIN thin?

View Quote

It's all mental. Fat people usually grow up with fat families and date fat people, and don't really have a "need" to be skinny. It's just normal for them.

A lot of fit people have some sort of "need" that drives them to be fit.

Remember, it's a lot easier to be fat than fit.

I know the govt gets a lot of shit about the food pyramid, but not all govt info is bogus.

https://health.gov/sites/default/files/2019-09/Physical_Activity_Guidelines_2nd_edition.pdf

TLDR, 150 minutes of moderate cardio per week, plus minimum of 2 days of weight training.

So 30 min a day cardio x 5 days a week, plus 2 lifting days.  That’s pretty ambitious for most.

Deeper in the report, those who meet the above reduce their lifelong morbidity by 30% compared to those who don’t exercise.  Imagine the health saving we as a society could achieve if we just exercised 30 min a day, for life.

Being fit is more important than being thin based on the data.

It had been my experience that once you put in the work in the gym, the weight will fall off.  It’s physiological for me.  Once you realize how much effort it takes to burn 500 calories and how easily it is to consume 500 cal....it just clicks.

Unfortunately, it's not always that simple; you still need to be at a caloric deficit to lose weight.  Building muscle means your resting burn rate goes up.  Going keto means your resting burn rate goes up.  Tossing out sugar and carbs means it's harder for your body to make fat.  All these things combined with a caloric deficit will get the weight down, but you still have to do the groundwork.

As someone who has lost 90lbs over the last few years and is struggling to drop into the "normal" BMI category from "overweight" I discovered I absolutely have a food addiction. Drugs never interested me, I'm baffled that people can be addicted to porn, I can go without booze and beer for months at a time but when my wife brings pizza into the house I understand what an alcoholic at an open bar feels like.

Mrs Rabinowitz retires in 11 days from 40 years as an OR RN.  She has cathed thousands of people in that time.  It takes two to cath the fatties.  One pushes down on the fast around the dick or the pussy region and the other to dig in to find the opening.

Why would a man be willing to stay fat so he can piss on himself every day?  These folks smell bad and tend to be dirty down in their rolls of fat.

When you get so fat that others have to help you with everyday chores, you can't do simple exercise, or you become diabetic at a relatively young age, you are one selfish, weak person.

My b-i-l is a druggie.  Every time he talks about his poor money management and how he can't fix his rotted trailer, it is pointed out that he wasted the 10s of thousands of dollars given to him to get him some nice, simple, new, bolted to the ground housing.

"I know.  I know.  I'm a junkie and junkies make bad decisions."

What a POS.  He hasn't worked in decades and lives off the government in spite of owning 75 acres east of Dallas on I30 near Caddo Mills.

That’s the Venus of Willendorf, to my knowledge the oldest fertility idol out there at around 25-30k years old. But for thousands and thousands of years, full figured and then some was considered the height of fertility ideals. If you could be fat, you had enough food to support many children, etc.

I feel your pain. So much.

I comfort myself by watching the weight I lift go up, even if I stay heavy myself.

All you can do is eat right and exercise. If the weight doesn’t come off, just keep at it. You’ll be strong and fat and righteous regardless of how big you are.

That’s how I look at it. I’ll never look as good as I want to or fit into the clothes I want to. But if I keep going to the gym and eating very few carbs, then I’m succeeding.

Can’t we do both? I mean, low thyroid and insulin resistance don’t absolve you from staying thin, but they are factors.

Giving up is a big reason why people stay fat. The weight doesn’t come off, they’re too self conscious to get help and think they’ll be made fun of at the gym or on a bike around the neighborhood.

To me, medical factors that keep me fat are comforting. It makes it not my fault the weight comes off so slow. It makes it ok I suck at exercise and I’m not progressing. Having low expectations for myself keeps me from getting discouraged. I see myself as one of the little old ladies with a walker who meets her PT at the gym, just plugging away at it every day.

Bottom line, for me, is that because of a million factors my results are pure shit. All I really control is my effort.  Blaming “some disease” really helps me stay motivated because it allows me to focus on that continued effort as my success.

I didn’t decide to get fat. It snuck up on me while I was kicking ass at other things and getting my ass kicked back.

Being fat is a decision.

Byproduct of getting older.  I always wanted to put on a few pounds when I was younger, but never could.  I turned 40 and like magic, those pounds appeared, and brought their friends.

I've tried, but short of not eating for a couple of weeks, there's no way to keep that extra layer of fat off, so I've just resigned to being at 15% BF.

So then just post pics from the neck down.

I think that means she likes you.

Because throughout human history fat is not a natural state of the form.

Hunter gathers burned calories

You worked to survive

Overeating, sugar and carbohydrates in general didn’t exist

Fat is a relatively new condition

Huh, 25-30k years ago, this was what fertility looked like…

What the fuck is that?

We're still not sure if it was women taking selfies or guys carving porn.
