It, Thinner, The Shining, Dead Zone, Salem's Lot, those were the days. Lately, everything he writes sucks. Makes me kind of sad.

How many ideas can one guy come up with? He isn't Shakespeare.

He is just in it for the paycheck now.
I've read a lot of the old stuff too, it was a good time. I tried one of his newer ones a few years ago, said fuck it and gave the book away. |

That time travel killing kennedy book was alright I thought that was O'Really's book? King wrote a book about a guy who could time travel. He wanted to stop the assasination. |

I don't know. I have thoroughly enjoyed some of his newer works.
I thought Joyland was an excellent short read. 11/22/63 was also very enjoyable. He has definitely evolved over his career, and I also think that has been part of my enjoyment as a reader. Gave my mother a first edition hardcover of The Stand for Christmas this year. She freaked out.

View Quote "It" sucked, and not just for the creepy "all the little kids have sex to defeat the monster" ending. King got too big for his editors. Same as the Wachowskis on Matrix 2 and 3, same as Robert Jordan and his bloated whale carcass Wheel of Time series etc. He's so popular no one can force him to stop the self indulgent rambling, and people will buy his stuff on name value alone. |

I have the first half of The Dark Tower series in the mail right now.
I read through them all about 10 years ago, it is awesome just for the crazyness of it. I figured it was time to read through them again. |
LOL yeah he didn't die that's basically it.
he really needs to team up with another writer so he can write the first 2/3 of the book and let some one else take over the ending. he's fucking terrible at endings "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." |
Because his name sells book now. He doesn't need to try to write something good. He gets paid either way.
He's 68 years old and has been getting published since the 70s. How many great spellbinding ideas do you think the man can come up with?
Because he's re-writing what he already wrote. Same characters, same dialogue, same plots.

The sequel to the shining was ok as well. The "diabolus ex machina" shtick he's on gets old after the first few books. You know, when everything is going ok, then some statistically absurd event occurs and everybody dies/gets maimed. I'm looking at you, "Under the Dome". |

Personally, I've always preferred his short fiction to his novels.

Art used as an outlet so to speak. King hasn't suffered in a long time. Gold has made him soft. His best work was done when he was a poor alcoholic. |

I always figured he just went for quantity instead of quality. Chances are some of them are going to be decent but the majority will suck.
After his accident (hit by a van) he lost something. This is most visible in the abrupt turn to suck after book 3 of the dark tower series. I won't read his new books but I am told the last few are better than those written right after his accident but still not in line with his old works.

And King fully believes this tripe and bangs that drum page after page of nauseating kennedy family fellating. |

So for those looking for a righteous Stephen King replacement what authors would you suggest?
Frankly, even his older stuff could be very uneven. His stories often went on way too long, he sucks at endings, and (at least IMO) he always had a tin ear for dialogue. Often found myself reading his stuff thinking, "Who talks like that?"
My favorites of his older work are "The Dead Zone" and "The Stand." Many times I've reread the "The Stand," and I only reread the first half or so of the book. He's also the king (NPI) of the "Deus Ex Machina" device. Every third person in Stephen King Land is psychic, apparently. |
Had a roommate who thought his books were great, I read a couple, the Dead Zone and The Stand.
Didn't care for them at all. |
SNL nose dived when all of the cast members quit doing cocaine as well. You guys may be on to something.
Nah.. he's always sucked.. and may fuck be upon his liberal ass..
He sucks because I don't like his books, because they scare the shit out of me.
Misery was enough for me, and the first page of the one where the kid looked down into the sewer. Fuck that. |

He got to live out the liberal fantasy of trying to save the great savior Kennedy from an assassins bullet. Much of it made me kind of ill. He somehow managed to leave out his favorite plot device of a magical child, retard or black person. |

11/22/63 was a good read. He's hit and miss though these days. I do remember that Salems Lot scared the shit out of me.

I agree that his older stuff was "better" - but I disagree on some of the specific opinions...
For example, I personally think that book 4 of the DT series (Wizard and Glass) was absolutely the BEST of the series. (The first three WERE great, the lasts few were "different, but still good" - but the 4th book was fantastic...) I'm also probably one of 3 people on the planet who thinks that the ending to the series was PERFECT - and the only way it COULD end to remain epic. Any other ending would have been lacking, but that one was ideal... And I do agree that 'The Stand' was singular. I was a ravenous reader as a kid, but never really gravitated towards King. Somewhere around late middle school I picked up the unabridged version out of boredom from a friend, and got hooked. |

Goddamn ridiculous. I think he lost his way over the years with regards to the story/direction. |
