It's a Trijicon RMR, Type 1. I found a good deal on it soon after I bought the rifle (from a member here) and I figured, being very rugged, that it would be a good fit. It would be nice to have something with a little magnification, but for now I'm happy with this. I don't have any other recommendations for a red dot.

Thank you.
Trijicon is good.
I'll continue to look into this.

I have a Marlin 1895 / .45-70 standard model w/22" bbl.
Also all the parts to make the version Marlin didn't...
The optic is the last component I need to get to complete this project.
Trip to the gunsmith is slated for next month after the tax return.

Same here.  I installed a Beartooth mercantile safety delete kit and the winged XS sights and it's been extremely reliable and even more accurate.  I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

In Wyoming, we use .22 shot shells, often from a Freedom Arms belt buckle derringer.  Shot to the face doesn't hurt them and scares them right off.

Apparently someone makes 720gr bullets for the 45-110.

(Comparison with a 405gr)

I don’t own any newer Marlins but what I’ve seen lately is much better than a few years back. Personally I would not buy one that I couldn’t inspect first just to be sure . With that said people seem to be happy with the more recent versions.

730 Grain Wide Flat Nose Gas Check (.458)
A very heavy bullet for .458 rifles. It can be used for extreme loads in calibers such as 458 Winchester, 458 Lott, 45-120 Sharps, and also the 45-70. In 45-70, it will not cycle through a lever action however. The overall length of the bullet is 1.690 and the length of the nose from the crimp groove is 0.720.

The people claiming .45-70 is overkill are cute. 405 grain bullet, 1200 fps(assuming original spec load). Cheap 12 gauge deer slug , 1 ounce at 1200 fps. 1 ounce is 437.5 grains. The two are very close...but the rifle is easier to shoot well.
Even buying factory ammo, the 45-70 is cheaper per round than almost any premium 12 or 20 ga "slugs".
And 45 cal bullets have better sectional density than the equivalent weight slug.
