It seems like overnight I've seen a large uptick in the term "wife unit". This strikes me as strange thing to call your wife. Does it only apply if your wife is large aka a "unit"? It doesn't sound like a term I'd apply to petite women.

It's usually "Spousal unit"...At least it was when I first heard it
years and years ago. In the .mil it was commonly "Household 6" |

It's been used or variances of it used in military circles of a long time.
Spousal Unit, 1 EA (not standard issue) |

We were using the phrase “spousal unit” in the 1980’s. I guess old is new again.

If they are shaped like a refrigerator, you call them a "unit".

Growing up on Quantico in the 60s I can remember two kind of hackneyed expressions that seem to have faded with time.
"If the Marine Corps wanted you to have a wife, they'd of issued you one" (I also remember the GO who retired(?) after he suggested a regulation forbidding Marines from marrying until they made E-5.) and... "You have a choice, you can be there for the conception, or the birth, pick one" (dad had to explain that to me) I always thought "Two PCSs equals one house fire" was funny, too, but not so much when mom would cry as they unloaded our smashed furniture. Damn the Marine Corps was cheap. |
