The article itself isn't really saying anything new, but it is significant because CNBC has been one of the more Slava Ukraini media outlets since February 2022. It's quite a narrative shift for them; they wouldn't have dreamed of publishing an article this clear-eyed even three months ago.
https://www.cnbc.com/2023/12/26/what-could-happen-in-the-russia-ukraine-war-in-2024.html At the start of 2023, hopes were high that a much-vaunted Ukrainian counteroffensive expected to be launched in the spring would change the dial in the war against Russia. It didn't, and the prospect of a breakthrough in 2024 is also unlikely, military experts and defense analysts told CNBC. They predict intense fighting is likely to continue into the next year but say Kyiv's forces are unlikely to launch any more counteroffensives. Russia, meanwhile, is likely to focus on consolidating the territory it has already seized, particularly in eastern Ukraine. Russia has shown that it is committed to a long conflict in Ukraine and that it has the capacity to send hundreds of thousands of men to war. Putin claimed in his end-of year news conference that 617,000 troops were currently active in Ukraine. Putin denied a second wave of mobilization was necessary for now, but in early December he signed a decree ordering the military to increase the number of Russian armed forces personnel by 170,000, bringing the total number of troops to 1.32 million. Russia is also massively boosting military spending in 2024, with almost 30% of its fiscal expenditure to be directed toward the armed forces. Its military-industrial complex has also ramped up the production of hardware from drones to aircraft. View Quote |

I thought it was Russia's war against Ukraine. It sure is hard to keep up.

I thought Russia ran out of missiles and artillery like a year ago and the sanctions broke them and Ukraine was going to get Crimea back with the Spring Offensive..
Not that I want Russia to win. Its just that reality is quite different from what the propagandists were spreading. Seems Russian and Ukraine news is chock full of shit. Can't believe either side |

Will be funny if we just spent billions helping train the russians to streamline procurement, reduce corruption, and overall increase their military’s abilities.

How did anyone think Ukraine was going to win?
The West is run by idiots. The US and Europe has serious internal issues at every level of society. There is no eagerness in Western countries for a war with Russia. The war is essentially over. |

I kinda feel bad for the average Ukranian that remembers hearing about Russia starving his great grandfather to death and the US pushing it under the rug because it was convenient at the time to do so for foreign policy reasons now watching his family get killed by Russians and the US pushing it under the rug because it is convenient at this time to do so for foreign policy reasons.

Hopefully they keep killing each other by the pile for years to come. When 2 corrupt shit hole countries destroy each other it’s good for everyone.

I’ve been one of the more vocal anti-Russia people, because fuck Russia, but anyone who thought this would go differently is being a big silly pants. I feel for the Ukrainian people but all I really wanted from this was to catch Russia’s dick in the door as badly as possible and make dumb shit like this hurt and be discouraged. Anything further was always a Hail Mary effort.

Use whatever language you want, but it sounds like UKr is done assuming the US is pulling financial aid. The biggest sign will be if UKr broker a deal real soon regarding land. Then you know UKr knows they're done.
Was the money sent to UKr a loan or gift? |

The Ukraine was never going to win. I'm not sure why so many here thought there would be a different outcome.

Russia is not going bankrupt any time soon, and they are not going to conveniently fade away. |

This has been a big win for pretty much everyone, except Ukraine.
The MIC is selling a ton of stuff to send to UKR, replenish stocks (though I know the US is mostly sending unused/older stuff), Europe is buying more/new equipment, and other countries that typically bought Russian equipment are looking toward the US/EU/SK. Win. Russia is still selling energy. China and India are getting Russian oil at a discounted rate, or moving Russian oil as trans-shipment point/reselling. Iran and DPRK are making money off their arms/drone shipments. Other than the US/EU blowing a bunch of money, UKR is really the only one getting the shit end of the stick on this. Though there are some less than pleased Russian families, but their children likely would have died from stroke/alcoholism young anyway, and track suit sales are down. |
