Isn't just bolting two planes together to make the biggest plane possible just cheating?
Fasten two tanks together and have the world biggest tank!! |

Stick a dozen GAU 8's under that central wing section, instant CAS.

Damn we got a whole lot of aeronautical engineers on this forum. I never knew.
|

I would have had the elevators tie together for more structural integrity, other than that it looks cool and I can't wait to see one fly or crash
|

Reminds me of that 3 headed monster Godzilla fought a few times.
|

Maybe after releasing its payload, the two halves do separate for individual return and landing!
Yeah, I'm not seeing why it doesn't have a spar between the two tails. |
|
I hope SpaceX doesn't put them out of business before this thing can fly.

It looks strange, but I figure the aerospace engineers have thought out the structural integrity of the design... because most of us goobers are thinking, "It's gonna suck when the middle wing breaks apart."

Pretty much what I was just thinking. The center of that wing better be a whole lot stronger than it looks...or that thing is going to fall apart if it ever gets rough up there. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

that does not look structurally sound... Can you imagine the stress the independent tails will induce alone?? At least tie the tails together like the P38 did. |

You doubters make me ill. You think Paul Allen doesn't know how to properly simulate an aircraft design? How to test it for structural integrity under aerodynamic forces? That plane has fantastic thigh gap.
Also, how many 2,000 pound bombs could it carry? |
|

1) everyone is acting like the center wing section is providing no lift.
2) Twin Mustang |

I actually AM an aerospace engineer and don't think that looks structurally sound. But, for what it's worth, over 15 years ago, I did do a very detailed analysis of a configuration that used two C-5 fuselages with a slab between them to hold the rocket (and the tails were joined, not two independent pieces). We were actually going to use the left and right wings from the C-5, just a new straight segment between the two fuselages. Spent 10 days with almost no sleep working that with a bunch of other people because somebody wanted it in a hurry to make a multi-billion dollar decision.
Multi-fuselage aircraft are certainly not new. Most of the ones I've seen that were either built or just concepts looked a lot less ugly than that thing. |
|
Looks like a runway only type aircraft. How do you get from the parking area to the runway? Aren't typical taxiways 75 feet wide? That is the min taxiway width for the C-5.

Looks like something north Korea would make out of plastic, carboard and paper to show off their super advanced engineering.

It's designed and built by Scaled Composites - aka Burt Rutan. I'd put my ass in ANY airplane he's designed and not worry about it. This is just big brother to Boomerang and White Knight 2. Why do I feel like steering that thing is going to be like Siamese twins fighting over a blowjob?

I've talked to them. 60 hr minimum work week for about 1/2 what you would make working anywhere else. "Working at Space X" is a large part of their compensation package. Their burn out rate for employees is staggering.

Two initial observations: 1. That has to be weird having two cockpits where you cannot get from one to the other. 2. I don't see how that thing is not going to break apart at the center? No way the aerodynamic forces are not going to sever that thing. View Quote |
