your 2IC?

Amos Burton or Jayne Cobb? No spoilers for The Expanse, please. I’ve just started season 5. I’ve watched Firefly several times, though.

I voted for Amos, but if we can pull from any scifi show I would pick Aeryn Sun.

I picked Spock since he actually know shit, and I don't. Call it the Kirk syndrome...

Amos is definitely head of my red shirts though, not leaving any more of those poor bastards dead on some alien world.

Spock or Data, for the same reason.

Chewbacca. His loyalty was absolute.

Burton didn't have a conscience of his own. For him to delegate that to Naomi only works when she's around and not constantly crying.

Cobb tried to burn his own crew for a payoff at least once. Despite what the stockbrokers' legal disclaimers say, past behavior is still probably the best predictor of future performance. I won't keep a crewman I can't trust.

And Spock is from ST, a universe in which only the Maquis and the Ferengi even deserve to exist.

ETA: I could work with Saul Tigh, as long as I could keep his blood alcohol in that sweet spot where he's not in DTs but he's not also airlocking the entire damn crew of the starboard battery.

ETA2: Smashy and TrailerTrash both get it. I live at Branigan levels of dumb, and probably need a Kif to keep my ass out of the fire.

WTF, man??? This isn’t rocket science. The question was who would YOU want as a 2IC? I typed slow just for you.

And doesn't want the Captain slot.

I think Andromeda from the show by the same name would be a contender:

I wanted to like that show, but it seemed like every single character was painstakingly written to make me hate them. By the time I lost interest a couple seasons in, I was praying for the extinction of the human species.

I voted Spock on the assumption it was for a large Starship where I, as the Captain, am responsible for the lives of a lot of crew.  I would want the most dispassionate, coldly logical, strategically thinking sounding board as my 2IC.  In the event I am incapacitated or killed, I could trust him to quickly and accurately evaluate the odds of completing our mission, and weigh that against the lives of the crew and the importance of the mission.

If it's more of a Millennium Falcon thing, just me and my 2IC and maybe one or two others, then Amos.  He's loyal, in a way, won't hesitate to kill anyone that needs killing, has the sort of street savvy that could keep me and the crew alive in strange and foreign ports, has mechanical skills to keep the ship running.
