Quoted: I'm not even sure why I feel compelled to come and defend Prince.! Skip to 3:30 marker and enjoy. No smoke, mirrors, camera trickery or prerecorded track. This was a live, raw performance. RIP Prince. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWRCooFKk3c View Quote A friend of mine has been a fanatical follower of Prince since the 80's and she saw him in concert and somehow got in to a small club where the band went to Jam afterwards. She said he would call out a key, demonstrate a rhythm and do a count off and the band would just rip into an improvisation. I once heard a radio interview with someone who worked with him and he stated that at that time (long before his death), he had over 5000 songs written. As odd as it sounds, Duff McKagan of Guns N'Roses was a huge Prince fan, just as Axl was huge Elton John fan. Prince Live - Play that funky Music - Hollywood Swinging - Fantastic Voyage 4/28/11 |

Between battles among family members and record labels, we may never hear any of it. There were numerous "new" music releases from the Hendrix estate in the years after his death. Most might contain one good tune and the rest were rather poor mixes of studio outtakes. If we ever hear any of the Prince stuff, I hope this isn't the case. That said when it comes to Prince may I quote Frank Zappa, "Shut up and play your guitar." |

There is also a story behind it and why prince did what he did there. He was making a point to someone else on that stage. At any rate, its a subjective topic. But Prince in the top 5 ever is pretty much humorous, when so many masters have been named. |

I love that performance. Rank him how you will, there are valid non subjective reasons why Hendrix, EVH, Roy Clark, and other are named. And most names fall in the very subjective category that have been listed. I am cool with that. I don't hate it that you may like things I don't. Liberty. You may, however, have missed the WHOLE POINT to my last post. |

Guitarists that I love to listen to-
1. Angus Young- great tone, vibrato, fretting… has written a thousand classic riffs. 2. Michael Schenker - amazing tone and unique style 3. George Lynch - unique sound- his solos make even mediocre songs listenable 4. Tony Iommi - grandfather of all things metal. He should have patented the heavy, minor-loaded sound he invented. 5. Eddie Van Halen - changed the way people looked at rock guitar. Ridiculously talented musician. Fun to listen to. Band mates should have thrown his keyboards out of a moving tour bus. (Honorable mention) - Richie Blackmore (total weirdo, shitbird to his fans, but damn that dude can play a guitar) - Jake E Lee (unique sound - even if he is a total dumpster fire of a person) - Vivian Campbell (neat tone) - Zakk Wylde (brought back the “big” guitar sound) - Eric Johnson - ridiculous ability… strange dude… plays Hendrix better than Hendrix - SRV - beer drinking music guitarist Talented Guitarists that total music nerds love, but I don’t particularly love: - David Gilmour (good enough to almost make Pink Floyd listenable… but not quite) - Alex Lifeson - Brian May - Jeff Beck - Steve Morse |

Quoted: people have limited knowledge of great guitarists include Prince based on a single performance View Quote My $0.02 - Prince was a really talented musician that loved what he did, and helped a ton of other musicians. As a guitarist, he was very competent, but doesn’t belong on any “all-time great” lists. |

Quoted: I’m going to go with Terry Kath SRV Jimmy Page EVH Mark Knopfler I put Terry Kath first because IMO he is one of the most underrated, hardly ever mentioned and Jimi Hendrix called him the greatest guitar player Watch the entire video, the shredding starts at 2:58 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7uAUoz7jimg View Quote Terry Kath is way underrated. I imagine cause they had way too many horns in that band, so he didn't stand out so much. Roy Buchanan was amazing even though I'm not a big fan of blues. |

Lots of good ones on here, but at the very least Derek Trucks and Robert Cray should get some honorable mention.
