Interesting perspectives.
I had long hair and had the whole grunge look during high school and into early college. In all the time I was dating, regardless of style and hair, I never got the intimidation talk from any girl's father. I dated several girls who admitted that their father had given that sort of speech to every guy they had ever dated except me. It should be noted that, when I picked girls up at their home, I made it a point to introduce myself to parents, shook hands, looked parents in the eye when we spoke, and I could string a sentence together. Later in college, when I would meet parents after a few dates, I treated parents in the same manner. Maybe presenting myself as a respectful and respectable person had something to do with being treated as one. But, you know... YMMV. |

The thing is, you don't know what your kids are doing when they leave the house. You don't know if they're drinking, you don't know if they're doing drugs, you don't know if they're having sex or who they're with. You may or may not know where they are, due to some technological advances, but that's easy enough to get around.
Every girl I knew in high school who drank, did drugs, or had sex (and that was most of them) had parents who had no idea. Kids have made their decisions on that stuff by that age (may put off the drugs decision until college). Some chose not to do those things, some didn't. I dated a girl the early 90s (pre-Internet) who was 19. I was the 56th man she had slept with. There were also a couple of relationships with girls and the odd threesome. She was at least one abortion down the road by that point too. Her parents were positive she was a virgin. Ironically, she got married a couple of years later and they started paying for her birth control (because now she was sexually active, you see). Just clueless. |
