Katana, Halberd or a Halligan.

I would take any of the three.  A katana is light and quick (no-dachi anybody?)  A halberd has the reach and point of a spear but the blade of an axe.  Much more unwieldy than the katana but also has longer reach.  The added weight would also make it more destructive against bone, wood, ect.  A Halligan is heavy but would still hit hard and is a great tool for many situations.

Edit: Page 2 is mine!

That was basically Frankish infantry doctrine.  It worked pretty damn well... they used small axes instead of hammers, but the principle was the same.

When you have ammo, shooter.  When you don't have ammo, pilum.  The perfect tool for smashing in the faces of smug libtards.

Interesting, a good friend of mine has been a medieval reenactor for about 30 years...he is fully committed to the life...has amazing craftsmanship skill, has apprenticed as a blacksmith using traditional methods, can make metal tools....but relative to this thread, regularly competes in real jousting contests, sword fighting, and various exhibitions with real armor. They use dulled down swords for 'fights', however my buddy (and his colleagues) are good with hand weapons, fighting, and self-sustaining. If ever there were a group of guys prepared for such a scenario, these dudes would be having a field day.

The heavy swords, or heavy blunt weapons were needed to do damage through mail and especially plate. Since we're talking end of civilization type scenario, I doubt you'll see mail or plate out in the wild. In which case, lighter weapons that can be swung faster are better.

I'd say realistically an 8ft spear would be your best bet. It provides a great stand off distance from your enemy and has to be fairly easy to use as a novice.

Second best would be either the Katana or the Rapier. Light, quick, and stabby with some range to them. If you act retarded with a decently made Katana, you're just as likely to kill yourself with it as a bad guy.......

I've got an arming sword because Murica, and sharp things are awesome. I'd like all of the above (Spear, Katana, Rapier) but funds are limited and I like being married

I'm going with the American Cavalry Saber

Great for slashing, and stabbing, one handed, with knuckle protection

Technical, I know its not a proper mace...and while a traditional mace would likely suffice, the chained mace (or flail) just always seemed like a great way to express ones most strong emotions

I've been told that a spear is a superior weapon to a sword, but I'm curious why.
it makes sense that a spear is better to the untrained user, but what about a expert with a spear VS. an expert with a sword?

would the spear still win? it does have a longer reach...

Very few people would actually have real, functional swords or spears and even fewer would know how to use them.  In a realistic scenario, either of these would probably suffice:

Probably the ultimate incarnation of the fighting sword.  It came a century or two after the sword had a whole hell of a lot of battlefield utility, but hey, that's how shit happens sometimes.

You can make a long spear a short one pretty quickly.  A hell of a long quicker than the other way around anyway.

This isn't medieval Europe,  He said post apocalyptic.  Limited ammo.  Which means guns are still around, so firearms are still primary weapons.  I don't want to carry around a rifle and an eight foot fucking spear.  Melee is a secondary weapon, for me that means sword.  Without plate armor to deal with, the sabre would be the most technologically advanced sword.  Hand protection much better than a katana, and better steel.  I chose the cutlass because it's a little shorter, and has a more robust construction than the sabre. Sabre would be my second choice, preferably Polish.

I have a tomahawk and a Cold Steel Kukri machete for when shit pops off, which will probably never happen. They both have 550 cord lanyards for retention.

I always wanted a Katana but any weapon that requires both hands could put you at a disadvantage.  A smaller sword would be better but with that sacrifice in reach/range I figured my above choices at least have a more functional role if needed for other uses.

Depending on the area,I would take some flavor of spear. A properly sharpened spear head of the right design is good for slashing and stabbing, the long shaft gives you reach, lots of gripping area, leverage, and serves as a staff. A pointed or even blunted cap on the butt of the spear increases the usefulness as a weapon even more. Spears are also useful for hunting. Try hunting a boar with a katana and let me know how you do.

A spear does face disadvantages in confined areas, as does a long bladed slashing type sword. Any slashing weapon will do poorly in a hallway or confined area. I believe a spear with a gladius world be an ideal kit. The gladius could chop and slash in a pinch, but excels at stabbing, and the sharpened edges discourage attempted disarmament by grabbing the blade.

Seems like this weapon would have to be dislodged from each target, which would slow you down enough to become an easy target yourself.
