The pickups alone went through 40 iterations with Grissom over a year starting from the already great PRS pickups - he was trying to nail the vintage PAF Humbucker tone (i.e. Duane Allman at the Fillmore East). Taller frets, better neck profile, etc.. Mahogany body and neck, rosewood fretboard, set neck (glued properly in a pocket, not bolt on), two part bird inlays (I think they are corian outlines and a laminated abalone insets, upgrade over dots), hand selected curly maple "10" top (more figure, gold hybrid hardware, $700 upgrade), carved violin top with recessed knobs and switches. Nitrocellulose finish not polyurethane (probably not actually noticeable in tone as some claim, but it is a strong preference of mine appearance wise, less plastic looking, and is traditional). Floating tremolo bridge (whammy bar was the pipe cleaner thing, not installed in the pics). It is a core model meaning made in the USA and the top standard line for them, but they do make more unique customs with super fancy wood etc. that can reach over $12K easily. This was used (2020 construction) but totally mint - there isn't a single mark anywhere on it. It plays like butter. In comparison with the vintage Gibsons, they were special in being hand made by extremely talented individuals and were a representation of the highest level of craftsmanship. In comparison PRS uses significant robotics etc., which is less cool but more accurate, and they are not constrained by old traditional models that can't be changed significantly because they are iconic parts of their branding (E.g. a Gibson Les Paul). PRS was therefore able to implement more improvements to playability and develop things with more flexibility. Although major processes are robotic they still do all get the hand touch and the fit finish and setup is immaculate. Beyond that, at least this one has some kind of mojo that just makes it play much easier than what I'm used to which makes a tremendous difference in enjoyability and how well you end up playing and sounding. Not sure how much luck involved there. https://i.imgur.com/4B1W3Hu.jpg https://i.imgur.com/GZXQorj.jpg https://i.imgur.com/VGAYTX0.jpg (the "binding" is just the unstained sides of the top maple) https://i.imgur.com/RhzRjiR.jpg https://i.imgur.com/2haa4qZ.jpg https://i.imgur.com/3paVZ8X.jpg View Quote Damn it's gorgeous. Hit a convenience store, wife asked the guy behind the counter about knives, he immediately says oh my goodness, you don’t have to worry, it is very safe here.
I proceed to explain I feel naked without one in my pocket, just handy to have. Little SAK or something. Oh, I understand, I am all out right now, I am out of many things. What you want to do is go to the smoke shop behind the French market. They will have knives for sure. Definitely there. He then proceeds to name off all the places we went today and told us those places won’t have knives (which we knew from going to those places). He also said don’t go to ?(couldn’t understand the name), they will rape you on the price. Charge far too much. But smoke shop will have what you want. Well thank you for that. Then we scoped out Ruth Chris. |

Thanks - I was afraid the blue would be too over the top but I am really liking it in person. Had to have the natural back which took some extra looking - I really like the contrast of it in the cutout, vs ones where that is stained to match the top color, and can't stand the idea of mahogany basically being painted over as the back appears in a lot of examples. |

It's inexpensive so I wont feel bad abusing it. The scales are too thin. The knife needs more meat in the hand. The frame lock means index finger placement is important as fingers in the wrong place will inhibit opening the knife. The thumb disk is too small for the knife and in conjunction with the frame lock finger placement issue, the knife does not open as easily as it should. For $45, it's not a bad knife but it would not likely be my favorite. As a work/beater knife, no problem. I purchased it with the intention of using it as a test drive for an actual Appalachian, and to be honest, I think I will pull the trigger on a real Emerson Appalachian as I like the size and shape of the blade, and I like the general ergos of the handle when the knife is open. It's in the opening of the Kershaw that it fails, and to be fair, it only fails when you compare it to better knives. I'm used to better knives, so I expect more. Once you acknowledge that it's a $45 knife, things become much more acceptable. As a test drive vehicle for the real thing...it answers the questions I needed answered. |

I really need to buy Monster Disk's for all my Emerson's, and follow that up with custom scales for them.
