As I said, the smoke shop did not have a knife, but two tourist shops did. In one shop they wanted $26, which I felt was too much, and I would have had to assume the name Omar, which I was fine with for a limited time. But the second shop won with the $13 knife. It was more than I wanted to spend, but they had my name.

oh yeah

oh no

in my hunt for a knife, I overlooked a number of key aspects that cannot even be overcome by the $13 pricepoint.

One might expect the centering to be a hair off, or even rubbing

one might expect blade play up and down

and side to side

and a loose pivot

one should probably expect China

one should probably expect a plastic handle

one should probably expect to be able to flick it open because it is so loose (but not flick it shut for some reason)

one should probably expect the action to be gritty even though the pivot is super loose

but serrated?

tip down only?

and even though it looked like a knife, it had trouble cutting this beignet

a lot of trouble

I fear I have wasted $13 to keep you all entertained for a few nights

the things I do for you...

Oh, I understand, I am all out right now, I am out of many things. What you want to do is go to the smoke shop behind the French market. They will have knives for sure. Definitely there.

He then proceeds to name off all the places we went today and told us those places won't have knives (which we knew from going to those places). He also said don't go to ?(couldn't understand the name), they will rape you on the price. Charge far too much. But smoke shop will have what you want.

Well thank you for that.

Then we scoped out Ruth Chris.

Kind of weird
Yeah, NOLA, particularly "safe" in reference to it, being top of that list.

The scales are too thin. The knife needs more meat in the hand.
The frame lock means index finger placement is important as fingers in the wrong place will inhibit opening the knife.
The thumb disk is too small for the knife and in conjunction with the frame lock finger placement issue, the knife does not open as easily as it should.
For $45, it's not a bad knife but it would not likely be my favorite.
As a work/beater knife, no problem.

I purchased it with the intention of using it as a test drive for an actual Appalachian, and to be honest, I think I will pull the trigger on a real Emerson Appalachian as I like the size and shape of the blade, and I like the general ergos of the handle when the knife is open. It's in the opening of the Kershaw that it fails, and to be fair, it only fails when you compare it to better knives. I'm used to better knives, so I expect more. Once you acknowledge that it's a $45 knife, things become much more acceptable.

As a test drive vehicle for the real thing...it answers the questions I needed answered.

Northern Mexico and the southern US border might be mostly desert but no place is more than 3 or 4 hours from the ocean. Breaded shrimp tacos.

In some areas it’s traditional to use a lime mayo/crema/hot sauce mixture as topping on tacos/taquitos/chimichangas/etc.

ETA the hard looking tacos at the top are deep fried shrimp and potato tacos.
