It was a milestone to do more than my body weight for the first time in forever. It gets hard when you're old (high 50's) as some of you know, and I have a relatively small frame naturally. Still have a little bit of a belly for sure, but their fancy body fat scale is putting me down at 15% now without doing any diet anymore. I squatted my wife and kid a while back for funsies. Trying to get yourself back into a rhythm is tough and the gains are much slower than they used to be. That's what I've been working on for a while. |

Originally Posted By rbb2: Why aren't you set up for doing curls in there? Feels good, right? Keep up the great work! I used to do a barbell workout on a 4 day split plus cardio, and was never bulked out but was pretty darn strong IMO. I don't recall specific weights and never worried/cared about finding a 1RM, but for doing reps my dead/squat/bench were all a little bit over 2x/1.5x/1x body weight (215 at that time), and I had a six pack if you caught me on the right day. But, since my first kid in 2015, I didn't work out a lick until the end of 2022 and it was getting bad. I did cardio only that winter and lost some weight, then quit working out again last summer and started gaining again, so started working out again this past Thanksgiving or thereabouts. Cardio and bending the bowflex (a "hand me down" from my parents). Once I topped out the bowflex on the bench press after a couple months (it's not even useful for leg press, it tops out at 215#, which reminded me why I didn't really use it much, plus bowflex 215# is not a real 215#) I started looking into getting some more equipment (barbell, plates, squat rack, etc.) and decided to try kettlebells. I may still use the bowflex for isolation exercises at some point, but for now I'm really enjoying doing the kettlebell thing. Last week I was finally able to do three full circuits with no rest during, and only a couple minutes between, of: 16 halos (8 each direction), 10 goblet squats, 8 overhead press each side, 15 swings, 8 bent over rows each side, and 6 front rack reverse lunges each side. All with a 16 kg bell. The overhead press and reverse lunges were the hard part, really. I fucked up my quad kind of hard on a lunge at the beginning. It took several weeks to be able to even rack the bell on my forearms comfortably, both in learning where to set it and to get accustomed to that much weight on a spot that wasn't used to the pressure. I'm planning to really get this workout/weight grooved, and then start on Simple and Sinister. The kettlebell thing is really interesting. I can see how they work your coordination, balance, and accessory muscle groups given the offset nature of the weight compared to dumbbells and barbells. OK, enough of that. Pic thread. I got a new Thorburn with Marchal bolsters with a much better blade shape than the other one I had, so the other one's on the chopping block. ETA: Huh, looks like I need to try to polish up the inlays a bit. https://imgur.com/e9NUkFS.jpeg View Quote I stick to machines as I'm likely to harm myself with free weights but see what you're getting at with your body having to maintain balance. Maybe I could try it. I'll report in from the ER |
