How long before it wasn’t an everyday thought that you had a shotgun stored away for emergencies?

I have plenty of firearms. This was just for a shit hit the fan situation. I guess I could’ve left it there. But I figured now is the time to pull out a good old fashioned riot gun to add to the armory.  Also I was wondering how it fared. Whether the vacuum seal would hold up for such a long period of time. I may just put it back in when this is over. Maybe I’ll post pics again.

Shortly after 9-11-2001 I purchased a new 870 and vacuum sealed it and buried it in sealed pvc. I figured it was time to bring it out 19 years later. Pictorial

I put it in a Gun bag (so no sharp edges would puncture the wrapping) double sealed it in vacuum wrap with a desiccant. Put it in a pvc pipe and sealed it. After 20 years. Only the outer vacuum bag lost its seal. It might’ve been better to have placed the whole sealed gun in another sock to protect the outer layer. It was stainless steel functions properly... the only oddity is that apparently the butt pad got impregnated with fiber from the Gun sock....

i have a remington 11/87 shotgun. the buttpad on my shotgun is sticky as shit, like glue sticky. i hate it, as it sticks to everything, and is even hard to get out of the safe as it glues itsself to the safe floor, to slings, etc. i love the gun, just hate the buttpad.

Remington had batch of recoil pads that had issues with off gassing at one point in time making them soft and sticky. I don’t know when it started or ended.

Somewhere around 10 years ago I shot 3 gun with some guys that had those pads on their 1100s. Some guys from Remington defense that were shooting told us about the issue and brought some new pads to the next match.

A literal TON of SKS were buried in PVC the 1990s.  They sold for as little as $79 each, and ammunition was $99 per K delivered back then.

Not sure which why you mean: the reason I did it was for a just in case situation having something buried in case of a burglary fire or “other” situation.
The reason I dug it out: I actually was curious as to how it fared after all these years. And this seems like the time to have an extra shot gun handy.

From what I have heard a 42 inch section of 6" pvc will hold a 10.5 ar pistol, six mags, 220 rounds of ammo, a poly 80 subcompact and 100 rounds of 9mm ammo.

not high on my list of gun shit to do. although now is a good time to work on stuff like this as you cant really buy ammo, or mags, tactical guns etc.

A lot of those gun socks are treated/impregnated with a silicone protectant that is supposed to prevent corrosion. I wonder if that seeped into/onto the rubber buttpad.

I actually think the compression of the vacuum seal pushed the cloth into the rubber. I used an alcohol pad and pretty much cleared it up. Here’s a close-up

Many molded rubber things have wax in them, the wax will bloom out to the surface over time.  You don't notice it with stuff that gets handled as it is very gradual and just gets super off.

My guess is that is what we are seeing here, and it's no big deal.

I have a model 700 Mountain Rifle from that era. The recoil pad did the same thing. I wiped it with Armor All. It stopped it from being sticky. I also have a Limb Saver recoil pad that did the same thing. They feel so similar, I wonder if they were from the same manufacturer.
