Is holsterless carry really against the law in Texas?  I don’t usually carry that way, but sometimes.

I fully endorse the post above questioning the point of going conspicuously armed

texas says belt or shoulder holster. the law doesn't define holster.

the definition i found of "holster" is this:
hol·ster
/'holst?r/

noun
a holder for carrying a handgun or other firearm, typically made of leather and worn on a belt or under the arm.

Sounds like a sling meets that definition to me.

Where does it say a pistol has to be holstered?

In the Open Carry law.  Only legal IN either a shoulder or belt holster.

Carrying pistol outside of the holster (in your hand in public) would most likely get you arrested for "Brandishing"

I have carried with just a knotted bit of paracord for a "holster", which is as little as possible, but true "Mexican" carry (jam it in your pants or under your belt) is not legal for "open unconcealed carry" in Texas.

Unfortunately, for open carry of a pistol, yes. Concealed carry does not require a holster.

We have basically always had open carry of rifles.  Carrying pistols was banned after the civil war.  When open carry was finally legalized, the law was written to prohibit "Mexican" carry.

This issue I was making light of is a braced pistol is functionally a rifle, but not legally treated as one.

I have a full golf bag of options, I made the original post when I realized it just was not really worth going down the bunny hole with a brace for this event.

Guess it would be confusing if I showed up with an AK...  But this event is about Texan / American History.  An American rifle is more appropriate.  Guess that knocks out the AUG as well.  Am slightly tempted to bring my Shockwave - I have a holster for it...

Didn’t read the thread, but I’m picturing something like the pressure washer gun goes in at the car was...piece of PVC attached to a belt attachment, melt some kydex or whatever into a trigger guard, bam

Open carry of a handgun in public?   Yep.

On private property under your control, do what you want.

Yes, a good holster will completely cover the trigger.

I know it sucks that we HAVE to have a LTC to open carry if one chooses to, but I give it to TX lawmakers for not actually defining a “Holster”.  They really could have made this infringement that much worse.
