That's awful to watch.  Were there any passengers in the B-17? They usually sell tickets for spectators to ride.

I chatted with the pilot/owner of the P-51 “Donna-Mite” at Oshkosh in 2005 about 30 minutes before he stalled it during a demonstration and crashed. He graciously let me snap a picture of him with the plane. I felt awful after he never returned.

If the P-51 was too hot for a join, why not roll into the vertical to lose airspeed or circle around. It ain't like there is an entire large combat formation to join with. Sad...

That was intentional. Mark my words.

P51 chased the B17 and rammed him.

What?
The ramming comment is the stupidest thing I've read in GD lately and there has been a bunch.

I saw a post from another group it was the CAF's P-63 and not a Mustang. It looks like he misjudged the closing rate and was supposed to go over the B-17 and didn't, or couldn't, pull up in time. Hate to see that. I have fond memories of Texas Raiders.

That one was also sad on so many levels - it flew over my house one week before the crash - I had snapped a video on my phone as it went past, as the sight and sounds of a vintage warbird like that were clearly different from the usual air traffic that I see.

So sad. P-51 probably never saw the b17. Rest In Peace to everyone who lost their lives.

These incidents with warbirds that are either not maintained correctly or piloted into the ground are far too common to ignore the trend.

In the video in post #24 you see a plane to the right just before the B-17 fell apart.   I never saw the plane that hit it in that video but need to look at it again since I know how the collision occurred.

I just looked again and either the fighter plane is hidden from view or the collision already occurred.

Without doing a frame by frame examination, it looks like we see the B-17 just after the collision.

Looks like the P-51 didn’t see the B-17 at all.

Think the B-17 saw the P-51 closing in?

A little bit of bank and slightly high and descending would do it, he was probably looking a bit to his left at the lead planes any way. The 17 I think is dark green, I think it would blend in with the ground potentially.

Warbirds are inherently dangerous.  They were dangerous when they were in active service, many were lost to accidents during training and combat sorties.

Just because they crash occasionally doesn’t mean that they need to shut down the entire warbird flying community.

This was a terrible accident and will be investigated with lessons learned afterward.

I've never called for shutting down flying warbirds. I have stated that this particular segment of GA has had a high occurrence of avoidable fuckups that kill people in the last two decades.
