This right here.

Hell, there's an intro quote in the 2nd Edition book from a street cop talking about magic returning to the world along with elves and orks and the line is something like "you didn't know if the next day your partner was going to grow tusks or fangs".

It's Alien Nation & Shadowrun, done in a sloppy, lazy fashion and diluting both.

The book Shadowbeat had a fascinating look at how corporations decided to go ahead and make use of the prevalance of uglier races and how it was referred to - "orksploitation".

For those who grew up in shitty areas, it was being used, but getting paid, and better than living in squalor.  For the entertainment corporations doing it, it exposed them as the bigots and assholes they were, but in a whole different light.

There are also TV shows that mock each other, with the ork-mocking one called "Down The Tubes" about an exaggerated version of sewer-dwelling Married With Children/Simpsons kind of family that would be the equivalent of... well... something like "Precious" or "Honey Boo Boo" done for laughs at the expense of orks.  There's an equivalent mocking show about elves, but without digging the book out, I couldn't remember more about it.

If this garbage show goes on to copy "Wyrm Talk" or has a dragon run for president, Jordan Weisman needs to call his fixer and get some wetwork specialists to deal with that bottom feeder Max Landis.

I bet the reason there were almost zero computers on screen was to head off  a claim of infringement on the Shadowrun IP, it can't be cyberpunk if there is no cyber.

I just finished it.  It was a jumbled up rampaging mashup of Will Smith-iness, crazed pyro gun craziness; a hot mess of magic with hot elvish crazy chicks and oh yeah, it gave my subwoofer a pretty good workout.  I liked it.

Grunts was an awesome book.

I watched Bright yesterday, I liked it more than I thought I would...not because I don't like the genre but because of the first few pages talking about it being all SJW-y but it actually wasn't, it was just doing the fantasy genre's time honored racial interactions dynamic but setting it in the "modern day, real world" (or at least an alternate history version of it) seems to make people look for things that aren't there. Or rather, things that are there, but not for the reasons that they were equating them to; fantasy racial dynamics, even if grafted onto the "modern day, real world" are apples and oranges to actual real world racial dynamics.

As for the comments about it being like Shadowrun, yep, very much so. The Inferni were not only mages but also pretty much the definition of Shadowrun's Physical Adepts which is something that you really don't see in very many fantasy movies. But it's not all the way Shadowrun, at least not what has been shown so far of the world. Now if they make a sequel that shows what hacking is like in the Bright-world, then it has a shot at being all the way Shadowrun.

I wanted it.  Was an interesting movie, I didn't really see too much SJW shit going on unless you tried to relate orcs to minorities and elves to whites.

Personally, I took it as a take on something like:  Lord of the Rings, 2000 years after Sauron.

You should check out Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series of books. They basically start out a couple thousand years after that world's version of Sauron won. Excellent dark fantasy that gets a little lighter as the series goes on, with a very interesting spin on how magic works and what prophecies really do and do not do when you find yourself in the middle of the action when the "Time of the Chosen One shall come..."

I’ll give it 4.25 out of 5 stars.

It’s has magic.

I keep seeing this fucking comparison to Alien Nation.
Now Ive probably not seen that movie or tv show in almost twenty years so I might be a little rusty on what so many seem to think they have in common
Similarities
1. Cop partners.
2. The non human had a patterned/mottled skin coloring.
3........
Well I cant fucking think of anything else so someone clue me in to what I must be forgetting.
Alien nation the cops were plainclothed, and Bright was uniformed.
The aliens in Alien Nation were intertwined into all levels of society where as the orcs were from what I could tell only bottom rung citizenry.
I remember the Aliens were mostly slaves when they crashed but cant recall if that was to another race or their own type.

I liked it.  It's obviously wide open for a sequel.  It should be a TV show, but I'm sure they blasted their budget on getting Smith.

Anyone that understands the traditional fantasy world social layout will like what they did. The plot requires some prior understanding of fantasy background.  Some people don't know what an orc is.  We watched it last night and my brother was confused (he's a jock) and my parents refused to be in the room and kept complaining that it was still on.

Meanwhile, I'm like, "where are the motherfucking dwarves... the true rulers of all that is cool?"

I liked it. Descent story line for a flick, you can fairly easily pick up on the backstory without having to have a long drawn out monologue. Effects were good, and I personally enjoy the new banter style of movies that are being made.

But there are definate "orc is the new black, and all cops are dirtbags accept for the minority ones" (the only two "good cops" in the entire fucking movie are the black one and the Mexican one...and the orc). And then there is the only pale skinned fantasy race having the best part of town and "running the world".... and making a point of driving from the slums to the "white" part of town for dramatic affect.

like i said... conflicted.

Yes on the orc/elf stratification,

If you really paid attention and thought about it during the show the orcs aren’t black,
They are a combination of black/scots/Irish/Russian/ Eastern European/ and the developed worlds “underclass” rejects

There was still human “race strife” in the show, on top of actual “magical race” “isms”

The brief back story sums it up pretty well from what we got,
The orcs (as per usual) served the ultimate evil, eating human babies, destroying villages (blah blah blah)
Until some rose up and said fuck this, let’s help the “not evil” other races

Basically they haven’t truly proved the, selves to be capeable fo being anything other than destructive savages and are treated accordingly on a case by case basis.

Which allows the writer to set the story up as a classic “underdog for the win” line

As mentioned it was predictable,
It was kind of cheesy,
And someone mentioned the “banter style dialogue” which is much more along the lines of 80s action movies.

I liked it, will smith works in the role because it was written for the egotistical sarcastic jaded asshole character,
I was more interested in the development of the orc character, as he is portrayed as more of an austitic human with orc features rather than an orc. His lack of Understanding of human traditions and social constructs make the hero development of his character more satisfying.

Overall it was entertaining,
I watched it because I enjoy the genre, and there is not a wide selection of equivalent shows.

I enjoyed it. I'll watch the sequel.

The social commentary that everyone claimed wasn't really there.

Yes, there's an obvious parallel to the real world, and they hit that really hard on the nose, however, this doesn't evolve into any kind of greater message. Will Smith's character's opinion of orcs doesn't change because he never held a racially biased opinion to begin with.

The only thing that happens is trust is built between partners. Other than that the state of the world is the same as the end as it was in the beginning.

No one on the outside knew they saved the world.

The problems:

I don't need a lot of background to enjoy a movie, I can fill in the blanks or just accept things the way they are. However, why does getting back the wand mean know she can resurrect the Dark Lord? It's obvious that Tikka stole it because she didn't want to bring back the big bad, but what changed there? She had it before, it's her wand.

The Tikka character was just a plot device for the middle 1/3 of the movie, several times she disappeared between scenes completely.

They set up the ending really far in advance when the dude with the sword mentioned that Will Smith's character was special, and I'm ok with that. However, how is it that the three gangsters just turn into a puff of dust when they touch the wand, but Will Smith's character thought he'd kill the bad elf by blowing himself up with it when she was further away than he and Joel's character were in the exploding gangsters scene?
