Gold Dot 124gr +P IMO is outstanding, IMO.

ETA: I’m issued ammo in a department that has its fair share of shootings over the years.  The above load has performed admirably for years.  Two years ago we switched to. Ranger 147gr bonded.  After a handful of shootings, all I can say is that it’s inconsistent.  Some work fine, some have shown extreme over penetration with COM hits, and pretty much intact bullets recovered with no expansion whatsoever.  I held on to my issued Gold Dots, and switched my duty and off duty guns back to those.

This here. And I've found Winchester 9mm NATO makes a good combination with it for practice ammo. Shoots and recoils exactly the same. Not the absolute cheapest as far as plinking ammo, but cheap enough for me.

He recommends using his high quality loads only in tough enough to take it guns like Ruger Blackhawk Convertibles, HKs, & Glocks. If the flames don’t convince you of the power, the recoil will, on par with 357 magnums!

I’ve had to put down big javelina attacking my dogs. Each case both large males…

124gr gold dot penetrated the shoulder bone and dead right there. One shot, one kill.

Sig 124 gr imbedded in the shoulder and fell out on the ground when it ran off.

Switched back to gold dots.

Barrel length. OP is running a four-inch barrel, so he can shoot just about any JHP and get good expansion.

I've seen gel tests done where some 147gr loads didn't want to expand after being shot out of a micro like, say, a P365.

ETA that as one user said, certain guns don't play nice with certain ammo. Remember how older 1911s didn't like hollow-point ammo?

It’s all good… though skimming the thread it looks like every load regardless of barrel length up to PCC style - props for the +P+ mention! - has been suggested.

Sig Elite might not be perfectly optimized, but it’s cheap enough that you can afford to practice.

I’d rather take a round I can hit with than one which will expand into 6 perfect copper petals in the tree 3 feet to his left.

Both of these were cutting edge performance when introduced three decades ago.  They have since been eclipsed by modern designs and suffer relatively mediocre and inconsistent performance in comparison.

This is sound advice. That would give you a good argument against a prosecutor trying to say you choose the "deadliest" boolits available because you wanted to kill.

But, Speed Gold Dot is top shelf, along with the Barnes XPB loads.  The new stuff from LeHigh Defense looks very promising and I'll likely choose that round the next time I'm upgrading my self-defense ammunition.

Best JHP: HST, Golden Saber, Gold Dot, Hornady critical defense. Probably a few others, but these are the ones I remember. Weight preference is dependent on pistol and bullet, but I lean towards 124gr.

Reality: 9mm is 9mm. JHP is typically better than FMJ, but it’s a minute difference. Target won’t know the difference, and shot placement matters more.

I’ve done a little backwoods testing with PMC, PPU, and S&B, they work well enough that the price difference is more important, since it allows me to train and carry the same ammo. They’re not as consistent as the rounds listed at the top, but to be frank, if I’m shooting something, I’m shooting it enough times that at least a few of those bullets are going to expand, and all I care about is putting a hole where something vital used to be. Bigger hole is better, but it’s not as big a priority as simply adding more holes.

From my gel testing

Hornady Critical Defense and American Gunner 124gr penetrate just fine and both expand pretty much the same. Oddly the JHPs out of my buddies 10mm are almost identical when you see them sitting on the table next to each other. Penetration was similar. I expected significantly more out of the 10mm.

The Lehigh extreme penetrator penetrated fine, had a decent temporary cavity as seen on the high speed but little to no permanent cavity. The recovered bullet hardly looks fired.

Montana Gold JHP 124gr was pretty disappointing. It shed the jacket but basically no expansion of the core. Penetrated further than the Hornady stuff that did expand. No surprise there.

Whatever aluminum case (CCI?) Stuff I use for 44spl expands beautifully, looks pretty and actually penetrated respectfully from a 2" barrel. Do NOT want to get hit by those.

Just my observations.

9mm was shot from an Arcus 94c, basicallyFroma short slide HiPower and the 44spl from a S&W 624

Yup, and still a JHP so we tested it along with other 9mm projectiles. Did testing with 10mm, 6mm ARC, 8.6BLK subs that expand to crazy flowers, 22LR, 7.62x25 JHPs from an 8" AR, and 44spl that outing. I think we had some XTPs out there too but I don't remember what caliber.

I didn't want to use up any of my .2215 Vmax so I didn't try any of those that day either.

We probably put 100 rounds into gel that day. Got slow mo footage of most of the shots fired which was sketchy. Glad my shooting buddy is one I trust my life with.

All shots were at 7 yards from the muzzle to gel. Some exited and could not be recovered.

The walking, talking, sack of shit Thomas Clair Binger tried to make FMJ bullets an issue in the Rittenhouse trial.

He said they were designed to penetrate the first person and continue on to injure more.

I just looked at a receipt I had from Target Sports USA.  HST from 2019 was $430 shipped for a case.  After that, I bought even more, thinking something would likely happen and drive the price up.  I sold a bunch during the latter part of 2020 for a huge markup.
