Tipping is a stupid practice when used for income and should be done away with.

Add the cost of labor into the meal and then let society decide if they want to eat out and leave anything additional.

That being said the Democrats love a weaponized IRS.
They'll make criminals out of everyone.

Meh, the "tipping" and waiters/waitresses is just a distraction and headline grabber.

What they really meant to say was "Anyone who is generally paid in cash".

The guy that (used) to cut my hair? He only took cash. The hairdresser my SO uses? Cash only.

Nail places? Lots of cash. Spas? A decent amount of cash, especially 'tips'. All of these 'antique' stores? Cash preferred (with a discount) although check/card if necessary.

Lawn guys? Gutter cleaning? Around here all illegals and they much prefer cash over checks / cards. Painters? Same.

I even have a couple of 'small time' mechanics that work on my older vehicles that are pretty much cash only. Sometimes they'll take a check if they have to. Same thing with the small job fixit guys. Deck? Shed? One or two electric circuits? Minor plumbing? Cash is king.

It was never about the "rich" that's just for the idiot masses. It's all about the undeclared income. Unless of course you are here illegally.

I should make this a copypasta because I am continually amazed by the number of freedom-hating rule-followers, socialists, blue-liners, glowies, etc., etc. on a website that, on the surface, is conservatively focused.

Here are multiple posters advocating for the IRS to clamp down on what, for the most part, are low-wage entry-level workers.

Just a thought: that cash money generated in the "underground economy" is a small but possibly significant part of the economy as a whole. I'm sure 100% of that money goes right back into the economy for goods and services.
View Quote
I don't think that for the most part people are advocating clamping down on anything.  Most oppose the extra spending on the IRS simply because they know it was a gimmick and will target pretty much everyone.

I do think that people are reacting to the sentiment that the "underground economy", as it people who work for cash SHOUDLN'T have to pay taxes though.  The only way we can get more people to understand how bad the existing taxation is, is to stop letting them be insulated from existing tax laws.

A true conservative knows that the money made by people both in and not in the "underground economy" goes right back into the general economy anyway.

Common sense says they're coming after pass through entities and anybody with a side hustle. Those are the most auditable/common situations.

That's why every local, state and federal agency loves when we pay using any form of electronic payment system rather than cash.

I don't give cash tips, credit card only hoping that they will be taxed on their tip income.  The articles on this topic say even then taxes aren't being paid on tips given by credit card.

I've known several waitresses that made a killing in tips, and none of it was reported as income.  Why should a waitress making 60-80,000 or more not pay taxes on their tips when the kid at Ace Hardware or Home Depot pays taxes on their income with a much lower salary.

Because it’s theft?

Because the waitress may spend it at the local farmer’s market, in your local feed store, for her kid’s tuition to get a degree in nursing, or at her friend’s beauty salon-
Where it goes straight to other people that work for a living.

Not for section 8 and EBT to someone that spends each day smoking weed and pumping out kids.

Or at least to pay for her own weed and support her own kids.

Jesus fuck. We founded this country based on taxation without representation, and now we’re paying over half of our income to taxes and government fees in one form or another, and you dicks are defending the government.

Some of you all are gonna have a real wake up call when this society finally crashes and burns and you have to survive without the federal government to guide your every action. If a man does work for you or provides a product, it isn’t the government’s God damn business.

Could you imagine the founding fathers watching every single citizen having to pay a professional to do their annual taxes, and still have to worry about an audit under penalty of imprisonment? This shit and those of you who support it make my blood boil. You’re some real Un-Americans. Move back to the UK if you want that lifestyle. I wouldn’t piss on fire to save a single IRS agent.

Just did your taxes?

No one likes paying taxes. There is a lot of waste in the government. People are gaming the system and getting away with it. Not reporting all your TIPS is relatively small time. When you add in the idea of staying below the government freebie limits it can add up fast. I am not saying that everyone is doing it but I bet there are more people doing it than you think. Fifteenth or twenty years ago I heard coworkers talking about how to get free health insurance. The company paid for 80% of our insurance at the time. One lady was telling the other to apply for state insurance omitting the company offered insurance. She also was told not to report that her boyfriend lived with them. I don’t know if the lady applied for free insurance or not.

Nothing wrong with you.

If someone isn't following the law, that's entirely on them.  The risk is theirs to take.  We all have to evaluate our own risk.

From a practical standpoint, everyone should understand what the IRS says about unreported cash earnings, and not be overly surprised when they come looking for their due.

I don't go after people or report them. The truth of the matter is it's every man for himself when the IRS comes calling.  That farmer you pay cash to, or the mechanic for example, you aren't going to pay his tax bills if he gets fined.

This shows an important concept that a lot of people don’t understand.
When they get in on the hate for the “top 1%” not paying their fair share.

It’s slight misleading because when you the top 0.1 to 0.01% types have way more wealth protected from taxes.  Alternative compensation, foundations, trusts, grants, political rent seeking arrangements, tax credits,  etc.
When you look at the numbers from the perspective of how much of their income does not get counted as income, etc. instead of what percentage of overall income taxes they pay, they truly have an effective tax rate that is a minuscule fraction compared to any of the other percentile groups.

Might be controversial to say but I was listening to some restaurant owner talk about this on the radio and I was thinking : while taxation is theft if they are taxing every dollar I make why not people who are earning over half their wages “off the books”?

Personally I think they should do away with federal income tax and instead institute a federal sales tax. This would encourage saving and also capture taxes from all the unclaimed or illicit income when it is spent.

Or let’s just do away with tipping totally. Make the restaurant owner pay a real wage and pass those costs on to consumers. It’s a fucked up system from the get go.

Just went out last night.  It was, gasp, a chain instead of a local place.
At a local place I tend to pay just cash and tip in cash.
At a chain I put the bill on a CC.  It’s paid off each month and we earn dime back.
Put zero on for a tip in the card,
Then left the cash tip.

What is the reason for putting $1 on the card-
Is it something they can report and is backed up by a receipt?
