So I was talking with a friend the other day who just had to tell me about his new Tattoo. Its seems he had his blood type Tattooed on the left side of his chest. I asked him why and he said it was in case he ever need medical attention at least the medical personal would know his blood type if he couldn't communicate with them.

So I got to thinking that sounds like a good idea but if a person needed any blood would any medical personal really pay attention to what the tat said or would they just give him O negative to be safe.

In a clinical setting it takes about two seconds to take a blood smear and find out what type you are.

Medical personnel are prepared for not knowing your blood type.

If I was brave enough I would get my blood group tattooed under my left arm, just to piss off and highly trigger the screeching liberal haters.  Although there would be a good chance in the near future of former America that act would get me put in prison and possibly even stood against the wall.

tattoo the wrong blood type
then sue the 1st responders for giving you the wrong blood
win
unless you are dead of course

I see DK already explained it

When my wife was receiving chemo treatments, they checked her blood type every single time.  They wouldn't trust records to avoid the possibility of a data error.  I doubt they'd trust a tattoo.

Sorry, but your friend's an idiot. I'm an RN and I can tell you that no medical professional is going to give your friend a blood transfusion based on a tattoo. The transfusing of blood is taken very seriously and no blood is given without two separate samples confirming the blood type. On top of that, the type and screen is only good for three days, then a new sample is needed. The system is overly cautious, but the risk of wrong type transfusion is too high. In case of emergency, your friend will get O- like everyone else, tattoo or not.

Not useful.

Nobody will give you blood based on a card, or patch, or even tattoo.  Blood typing is fast, and if it’s super-urgent they will just give you universal.

This.

It’s why we carry O negative.

Yeah.  Friend of my parents was given the wrong blood type back in the 70s.  It almost killed him and left him requiring leg braces to walk for the rest of his life.

They are going to type you anyway, even if it's in your chart they are going to type you. Buddy was having some issues requiring blood transfusions (out patient), they typed him every time he went in, even though he went to the same place, had the same staff, and his type was in his chart.

This.
Plus they need to match your blood to what they have on hand, if you'll be getting type specific.

Sounds like that cool new trend of someone selling you a thumb drive with medical records on them. Well, you just wasted your money. No one is putting an unknown USB in a computer. Even worse, many are password protected. WTF?
Medical personnel look for a necklace or bracelet. That's it. That is to the point it is a critical step in patient assessment for testing EMS students.
Emergency medicine is very well equipped to function and save your life using incorrect information from the most illiterate of resources.

No, as explained by DK, it was an identification tattoo used by the SS.  The German SS.  The World War 2-era German SS.  Not the Aryan Brotherhood.  Although, I'm sure some did it because their idols did it.

Just like the moral patches many people (including me) have on gear, it serves more for personal morale than for medical purposes.    I would argue most tattoos regardless of content are for the same reason.
