Which was the best AC/DC singer, Bon Scott or Brian Johnson?

Bon Scott, and it's not even close.

The exception is Back in Black,  which was an excellent album.

After that, I think AC/DC with Brian Johnson sucked.

I can't say either one was "better".
They both were great.

where is that meme where you compare 2 things and realize they are the same?

Scott and Johnson look and even sound the same to me.

Ah, here we go.

Brian > Bon because the Back In Black album, plus "Thunderstruck", "For Those About to Rock" and a few others. Album sales with Brian FAR out-sold those Bon. The BIB album sold FIFTY MILLION copies alone. "Highway To Hell" and "Dirty Deeds" notwithstanding, Brian is the voice of ACDC. and happens to be a damn cool, down to earth guy that you could have beer with. I honestly believe that without Brian, there's NO way that they sell that many albums

Yeah. Comparing either is like comparing apples to Huey helicopters.

I love Bon.

Back in Black is a great album and a great album for continuing the band after Bon's death, but Brian started sounding like Donald Duck on helium in short order.

Thunderstruck is a rocking song... I can't listen to it without thinking of Donald Duck.

Bon Scott… which is weird, since my favorite AC/DC song is "Hells Bells."

Their more popular songs came from Brian Johnson, their better songs came from Bon Scott.

Different singers that sang the songs written for them in their own style however, as a whole after BiB it all sounded the same.

Very well stated.

Very well.

I’m going with Brian Johnson.

Back in Black is an INSANELY great album that cannot be rivaled.

Razors Edge is quite good too.

Bon without a doubt.

BIB is great, but past that, all AC/DC sounds so incredibly similar.

All the best songs are Bon.

Bon Scott AC/DC was more varied musically.  They did blues as well as rock.

Ride On is a good example.

Brian Johnson Era (with the exception of BiB) all sounds the same to me.

Agreed. I voted Brian only because when I think AC/DC, his voice is what pops in my head. But which is "better"? Highly subjective.

Bon Scott was a better singer. I like more of the Brian Johnson Era songs, but those songs would all be better sung by Bon.

Of course, and he did them justice for a while. Check out Live at Donnington on YouTube, that's peak live Brian Johnson era IMO.

Bon was probably the “better” singer, and the bagpipes were cool. But AC/DC really hit their peak with Brian, and I think his style of singing just “fits” AC/DC’s musical style a little more. To me, that is the era that truly defines the band, sort of like Fleetwood Mac after Buckingham/Nicks joined.

Voted Johnson.

I grew up owning and listening to all of the Bon Scott albums.  He and the band was awesome.

However, I have spent a number of times hanging out with Brian Johnson. He's a local guy. He would come watch me play rugby and we would enjoy beers watching soccer and shooting the shit.  He has always been a good dude in my eyes.

I appreciate what Brian accomplished taking over, and I remember how impactful Back in Black was when it first came out.

I still prefer early AC/DC

They were good with Johnson, they were GREAT with Scott.  You could argue that the raw talent in the group was the only thing that helped them carry on after Bon's death.  They could have done well with a lot of other front men.  It was a miracle they found Johnson however.  It's like he was ordained to be Scott's successor.

Bon hands down for me.  But Brian Johnson was an absolutely perfect replacement.

Brian Johnson was the better singer, much better tone and control of his voice. But musically the Bon Scott era of AC/DC was better. I don't think it necessarily was the singer's fault, it was just that they began settling into a formulaic "sameness" by the time Brian joined up, while the Bon Scott era was much more dynamic and creative.

I'm a Bon guy all day long,  but flick of the switch and for those about to rock were pretty good albums.  I actually lean towards flick of the switch being the best of Brian Johnson albums

My favorite band of all time.  Grew up with the Brian stuff.  I've come to appreciate the Bon stuff more as I've gotten older.  Ride On is excellent as already posted. Voted Brian because of For Those About to Rock.

The sound is amazingly similar and enjoyable IMO.. I would say the Scott years the songs were more creative and amusing, but both rocking in the band's signature sound.

Bon Scott no question.  just feel like there is more soul and range in his singing

i respect what Johnson was able to do -- but the vocals of the band took a downgrade after Scott's death

which is pretty crazy to say given the immense popularity of several of the albums with Johnson singing

to me -- Johnson puts in a 'workman-like' effort -- does a good job for the money.  but that's about it.

whereas Scott was one of those 'characters' you have known in your life -- you never knew what might happen next.  talent and entertainment in a complete package.

Let There Be Rock.  Highway to Hell.  Whole Lotta Rosie.  If You Want Blood.  Night Prowler.  Jail Break.  Sin City.  Down Payment Blues.  Ride On. etc

Bon had been a drummer in a pipe and drum corps and Malcolm and Angus’ older brother, George, thought Bon could play bagpipes but when he learned he couldn’t he dared Bon to learn and play them on a song.  It’s Bon playing them on Long Way.  He played them live a few times too.
