We can all agree that the 40 million Americans in California can get fucked but we can't agree if gas is good or bad.

At dimondd817 I would have thought the ~1300 watts per meter on the half of the 510 million square km (5.1 x 108 km2) or 196,900,000 square miles of the planet's surface would have been the most abundant natural energy source. 13 megawatts per square mile of energy going to waste every time the sunshines on the dirt so I can't imagine the amount of NG energy present.

That is a perfect representation of what is wrong with California, and really, the whole damn country.  Not all of California is LA, San Francisco, San Diego, and Sacramento.  If those cities think banning natural gas heat is a good thing, then more power to them, but what makes sense in a few metro areas isn't necessarily the best thing for the whole damn state.  'One size fits all' rules are BS and are at the root of too many problems across the country.  Fuck all those rural folks living in the red parts of the state though where the climate isn't so hospitable, right?

ETA-. I'm sure installing a heat pump somewhere like Alturas where the ground is 90% basalt will be a real practical undertaking too.

Alturas? The place that almost never gets below 6°? That's not cold, and the ground has nothing to do with an air to air heat pump.

Our electric bill was almost $800/month in the winter/colder months. Due to a all electric house. We got rid of that energy whore of a Air Handler and went propane.

Even with a 12.5kWh solar array we still had a level payment of over $100/month.

All electric homes suck big sweaty donkey nuts. Good luck California ??.

ETA the previous owners/builders had almost a $400/month level pay from the electric utility company every month ??

Pretty funny coming from a Texan.

No plan, just knee jerk reactions. Typical Democrats, all the while spending themselves into oblivion. Driving the real taxpayers out of state all the while creating more and more homeless.

Maybe we should turn off the gas on them right now for a test run. Watch the grid melt down. The whole state is an insane asylum. It won't be long until we will need to fence in the whole state to protect the rest of the country. Keep the nuts in one place.

What about them banning ALL ICE, how well will that play with the power grid with all these chargers they'll need.

CA uses 3,313 billion cubic feet of natural gas. Gas companies service 11 million meters and 45% of the natural gas consumed is for the production of electricity. The ban was passed by the California Air Resources Board not the legislature. The Commies don't have time for no stinking legislature. When the people have to pay to convert their appliances over, don't expect a lot of screams. CA loves it's socialism no matter the cost. They want their dystopia now.

Ironically, when the power went out, a lot of us used natural gas or propane to keep warm - Unvented heaters, gas fireplace logs and inserts, camping heaters, etc.

How do you do that in a state where using fossil fuels for heat is against the law?

Yes, they had to shut power plants down and divert the gas to homes so people could keep warm.

Ironically, it would have used less gas to transmit electricity to those homes and then move heat there, but that's too complicated, I guess.

We used just over $800 of propane that lasted us over 15 months to heat a 2400 sq ft house and a 1200 foot house in the winter, while running  run three hot water tanks, a clothes dryer, and a gas stove year round for nine people. We live out in the country where natural gas is not available.

I suspect it won't be long before CA bans propane too.

They will.

Propane has a "carbon footprint" nearly identical to natural gas.

It's only a matter of time.

Ummmmmmm isn't natural gas heating way, way more efficient than electric? Like I can't see how this would be a net positive for CO2 reduction because their power grid is definitely not all renewables.

Electric works good for baking, not for the cooktop.
Try to get one that has electric oven and gas burners. That's the way to go IMHO.

They have a remarkably overbuilt and reliable electrical grid, so this should be fine.

California has like seven or eight different “climates”. It’s a big state with a lot of regions. The Mojave is not the lost coast or the high sierras, ect.

LOL

You really should stop.  My hint still stands. I suspect you confused efficiency with coefficient of performance. The link mentions efficiency.  Also, when comparing efficiencies of equipment with different fuel sources (gas vs. electric) you need to account for the cost of getting the job done.  It is more economically efficient for me to heat my water with natural gas than it is to heat it with electricity (whose generation source is primarily gas or coal around here).
