Some jackass took a bullshit dowsing rod that was initially marketed to retarded golfers to find their golf balls and rebranded it to find IEDs, people, and other shit.  He sold it to governments for tens of thousands of dollars a piece and probably got people killed in bombings because of it:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADE_651

Maybe he lost some super valuable piece of jewelry while planting that watermelon patch and traced every store that purchased them, after spending days going over the field with his metal detector and now, here he is...banned from several grocery chains for the metal detector usage, and forced to resort to his ancestral ways to find that goddamned Patek Grand Complications Celestial.

He curses marrying into money and tries to hide his shame by shooting disgusted faces at onlookers like yourself, knowing you'll probably snicker and take video that you upload and laugh with about with your Tik Tok friends. Even the Chinese government workers watching the TikTok users will probably get a laugh.

But, they don't know. You don't Know. You'd never believe him if he told you, so he just gets on with his work, one fucking pallet at time; Relax...don't tense up. It's just another stupid grocery store; it's gotta be in one of these...

I brought 8 schools out of the ground that had the same footprint, each school had about 70 storm and sanitary sewers leaving the building.
Eventually they would come and ask me to show them where all my pipes came out.
I would grab a piece of wire and make a big show out of marking all the buried pipe with paint.
People were amazed at my skills.

It was easy and fun fooling people.

People still make decent money doing around here.

“Dry hole you get your money back” deals.

Customer not knowing that in the area less than 1 in 100 drilled wells are dry.

I need to see if I still have on Witcher’s report from last year. Customer paid $20k for it. Was completely wrong.

That’s nothing.

I just invented a dowsing rod detection device. It consists of ten multiple-choice questions relating to basic science. If more than three are answered incorrectly, the test taker likely owns a dowsing rod.

It’s extremely effective.

I helped out part time at the water district years ago. They thought it was too expensive to gps map or tracer wire the waterline. 700 miles I think. Used dowsing rods to find it. Waterline took a lot of corner posts over the years.

Had a city crew out to mark their 36” main. They had locators, plans and a surveyor out..

They still marked the line with idiot sticks.

Thankfully we were drilling 50’ away.

I've seen utility locators use plans to mark a 20-inch water main. They wouldn't believe me when I told them they were about 50ft away from where it was.

Had the contractor dig a hole for me where it was... omg they found the water main. Of course having determined where it was going to be layed and having seen the crew install it I had a fairly decent idea I was correct.

That's the thing nobody gets.

Every now and then, I'll hear about somebody "dowsing" to find buried utilities at somebody's house or rural property. The problem with this, is that it's actually pretty fuckin' obvious where they're almost certainly likely to be. People who bury utilities for a living aren't likely to purposely go about it in a weirdly roundabout and expensively difficult fashion, for the lulz. They're trying to save time, money and effort. They're human, in other words. There's almost certainly one path under the ground that makes a lot of fuckin' sense, and wouldn't you know it? That's what they do. Magic. Behold the power of the rods. The guy wielding them knows nothing of this. He's just a medium.

And again - when you structure a test for these supernatural wizards in a way that allows for the very real possibility of getting it wrong (and actually recording it for posterity this time), they don't do any better than a coin flip. Odd, that.

It works brilliantly, until you actually test it in a falsifiable way. When this fails (and it always does), it's because of magic forces that are aware a test is being performed. Which is mighty convenient.

Anyhoo - I LOVE these threads.

Has he ever dug one up to check the sex?

So, depending on who you ask, dowsing rods can locate:

Any metal
Live wires
Pipes with running water
Any pipes
Groundwater (but according to one guy you have to dig by hand.  If you drill the water won’t be there )
Graves

The fact that nobody can agree on what it can find or how it works should be a clue.

If there is a stone with a name that can be read to confirm the sex
Some old graveyards had stones NOT in rows, then lawn mowers came along and now they are in rows.
So don’t trust the stones to show where the grave really is

My boss (a doubter) watched one of our construction guys find a 12" main.  We had no plans for the location it was put in long before anyone that worked for us was there.  We knew where it was a few hundred feet to the west and a couple thousand of feet to the east.  Dude told our crews where to dig and there it was.  I know we have a couple of guys left that still use them, I've seen guys from other water companies using them as I drive around.  I've never witnessed it for myself however.

So when I'm out on trouble and have to put down a "new" 20" hole 6-7ft deep, the wait for the gas, sewer, water and phone company to come mark their lines can take a while. I made a set of rods to play with while I wait for the "professionals" and in 3 years, I'm 100% on their marks with my "guesses" with the rods. Haven't hit anybody's buried stuff yet. But no, I ain't putting an auger in the ground until it's cleared by the other utilities.

Live wire
Cold wire
Running pipes
Gas lines
Standing water
Oil

Anything else?

My theory is something to do with metal and magnetic fields and flow of electrons. I have more faith in using them to find buried lines than "witching for water" but I'm not going to put my job on the line using just rods.

I hear they're really reliable.  Especially when they're used in areas that have lots of stratified clay and sand and usually have a good water table about 30-60 feet down.  You can hit water pretty much every time!
