He shouldn't be legally blocked from buying it all up if he wants to. Now it the current stock holders want to charge him $1B per share, that's their right too.

Would be great if he quietly sold his twatter stock and then announced he’s starting his own competing social site now…
…and that he was funding it with the cool $1B he made on his quick little Twitter investment

Researchers: Nearly Half Of Accounts Tweeting About Coronavirus Are Likely Bots

Nearly half of the Twitter accounts spreading messages on the social media platform about the coronavirus pandemic are likely bots, researchers at Carnegie Mellon University said Wednesday.

Researchers culled through more than 200 million tweets discussing the virus since January and found that about 45% were sent by accounts that behave more like computerized robots than humans.

It is too early to say conclusively which individuals or groups are behind the bot accounts, but researchers said the tweets appeared aimed at sowing division in America.

"When we see a whole bunch of tweets at the same time or back to back, it's like they're timed," Carley said. "We also look for use of the same exact hashtag, or messaging that appears to be copied and pasted from one bot to the next."

No doubt it is full of bots.

One trick to test for a bot. Post some inflammatory shit to the thread and see if the OP responds. If they don’t, start thinking of the OP as a potential bot.

ONLY 45%? Sounds low. I'd have figured 70-80% easy. Then again they were only looking at bots - another 25-35% could easily be Indian or Chinese click farms with "real people" behind the screens.

For what they are talking about, you could consider bots and click farms the same thing. Essentially, the goal is just to add some type of comment, be it to drive traffic or to spread this information.  Either way, the end result would look similar. Kind of like a drive-by tweet that has no follow-up or additional commentary. You wouldn't expect a click Farm person to sit in the thread waiting to respond to people who responded to their post.  They just make a post, and move on to the next thread.

What is the actual point of these bots?
1.Are they strictly trying to drive traffic to increase ad revenue?
2.Or are they trying to spread disinformation as some sort of psyops?

I would tend to believe the first one.

I would like to think thats where its heading. The denial of the board seat is definitely an indicator. Also the internal email referenced sounds nervous at best.

The entire premise of an "activist investor" is to take over the business to correct it from either monetary issues or other. He hasnt really been in that role before however, when he has recently said the following: 1)  "twitter is the defacto town hall"  and 2) has elluded to censorship and influencing the true voice its not that far out to think of someone like Musk who essentially has endless funds, may jump to correct what may be a real social, save the world like, concern for him.

IMHO the bots are twitter's or NGO Friendlies.
And that it's been going on forever.

Step 1: The HARD left SF higher ups want a cause to trend.
Step 2: The bots start a hastag about ___ fringe issue that means something to at best 10% of 2% of the population on a good day.
Step 3: They show it as TrendingTM on the right sidebar to get their leftie army to march to those coordinates. They quickly get in on the hashtag
Step 4:  Now the hashtag marketing campaign for the latest victim cause is noticed by the interns in newsrooms as well.

Step 5: It gets recited on TV by the televangelists
Step 6: The marketing campaign continues by social media, old media, and the Democratic party. Their base loves the new policy product launch.
Step 7: Wikipedia edited, and google's search results edited to help the cause.
Step 8: New PollsTM with trash samples now show New Policy IssueTM (with liberal stance) is PopularTM. Republican congresscritters scared shitless.

Step 9: GOPe consultant class buys this completely and caves on the issue.
Step 10: New Policy IssueTM is now declared MainstreamTM. Translation: disgareeing with it makes YOU Alex Jones.
Step 11: People who need to feel better about themselves due to their insecurities who need to fit into the herd, go into the remaining right wing spaces (like here) to Karen them into compliance.
Step 12: New Policy IssueTM that in actuality was never popular with most people, is being taught to children.

Bonus
Step 13:  _________ Concern raised by someone who was cancelled, materializes as described.

Step 14: __________ User/Person who tried to Karen the holdouts into compliance, does not answer for their fuckup or admit they fucked up, they are playing leftie-MSM-hall monitor for the latest cause.

The abrupt reversal over the board seat over the weekend ignited renewed speculation about Musk’s intentions for Twitter since the Tesla Inc. chief executive officer first disclosed he had taken a stake of just over 9% -- becoming the company’s largest individual shareholder. By not joining the board, Musk is no longer subject to an agreement to keep his stake below 14.9%. Twitter shares were up less than 1% at 10:34 a.m. Monday in New York.

Opinion: If he sells his shares, that stock value freefalls.

- "Goddamn even Elon can't fix it? Fuck lets get out of this stock. It's not growing it's dying."

- "Looks like Twitter isn't serious about making any real changes to make money. A real executive showed up and they scoffed at the ideas."

- "I guess they're just a leftie platform and not for free speech. Eh. It's DyingTM, it's a MyspaceTM not a FacebookTM."

IMHO I'm rooting for hostile takeover.
It's run by commies for commies, not for profit.
Commie capitalism needs to go, and if push comes to shove and capitalism wins out, the commies will know what it is that they've done to other people....

Starting their own space, and being kicked out of it by new people who don't like their values.

Basically the board seat would have muzzled him publicly.

Twitter could then ignore him behind closed doors and he’d be stuck with a cap on his shares.

He said f that.  Now what’s his next move?

Buy up more of the company to take it over?  Big move and would require a lot more cash, does he have it that’s not tied up?

Smart move. If he would have joined the board he would have been prevented from owning more that 14.9% stock. Now he can sit back and steadily acquire more stock and watch the liberals squirm.

Considering the 30% lift he immediately got which is now ~22% due to the 8% reduction over the announcement, he could almost add another 3% ownership and not be worst off then the day he pulled the trigger.

“This is going to sound funny but Musk’s immediate chilling effect was something that bothered me significantly,” Rumman Chowdhury, a director on Twitter’s AI research team, tweeted on Monday.

But amid the chaos, many of Mr Musk’s followers on Twitter have followed his lead, being critical of the platform.

“Twitter has a beautiful culture of hilarious constructive criticism, and I saw that go silent because of his minions attacking employees,” Dr Chowdhury, a pioneer in the field of applied algorithmic ethics, said.

Experts also point out that with Mr Musk not joining the board, he is also not subject to an agreement that would cap his stake at about 15 per cent.

If the billionaire had joined the board, they say he’d have been only one of the many voices in the company’s strategy discussions.

But by turning down this option, he could potentially build a bigger stake – one in which he might try to take over the company or help elect directors who are more aligned with his thinking.

"We believe the Twitter Board and Musk could not come to an agreement around Musk's communications with the public," he said.

"This now goes from a Cinderella story, with Musk joining the Twitter board and keeping his stake under 14.9%, to likely a 'Game of Thrones' battle in the months ahead, with the high likelihood that Elon takes a more hostile stance."

Translation from San Franciscese -
"We were hoping he was going to be like the other billionaire people.
He was going to give us billions of dollars.
We were going to use words like GrowthTM, SustainableTM, AITM, Corporate ResponsibilityTM, ModernTM, FutureTM, and even GrowthTM.
And we were going to listen to his suggestions, nod and make serious faces, and not do a fuckin thing he said while our purplehaired anti-depressant fueled employees roast him the second he leaves the room.

And it turns out he isn't playing make believe capitalism, he's a REAL business man, and he wants to make money, and not have it be Twitter And Friends leftie-utopia safespace clubhouse anymore.
