Thank goodness those are tiles and not shingles. Or those poor freshman would be pulling them off, hotgluing tiny nail head down and then layering the shingles. Probably need two extra rows to account for the overlap.
Then again, how would you make the nail heads? Aluminum glitter? Some poor kid with a hole punch and a sheet of grey paper? (They are doing a great job. I'm just seeing what it takes to start a revolution from 2, 3 states away!)

Update 9/24
Frantic Friday Time Yesterday afternoon we again adjusted the bottom of the nose contours just a bit. We believe we are ever more closer to the proper contour there.  One of our hangers was completed yesterday. We hope this gives the F22 the proper angle when suspended from the ceiling. We probably should test that at some point.   More work on finishing up the tail section of the fuselage. This is all being done with the 1/48th scale model, and hand drawn by students.   Light install took place late yesterday. We still have a bit more work to do on this today. We are also looking at what to add to the hangar exterior. We might add some kind of squadron iconography. Maybe a Panther with a bomb in it's mouth?  I'm happy with how the mural is going. We need to speed up a bit to make sure we get done before the science teacher wants to add her plants for her classes this year. That's coming up pretty quickly. We need to be close to finished under the hooks.  |

Antelope work from yesterday that interrupted much of our time.  A very blood soaked cape.....it took quite a bit of time washing in the sink to get it ready for salting and drying. Another cape is currently getting detailed before washing.  Fuselage is looking more believable.   More ribbing this morning.   |

We are working to define the canopy area again, and finish ribbing the top of the fuselage. We will begin working around the intakes soon. There has been lots of discussion on how to best do this. We thought about making them separate and adding them, but that may end up being more work, and less positive with fitting issues. We are not sure where that will go.   The wing parts are almost finished being cut out and ready to assemble. My muralists may be taking a break. They are mostly tired of painting grass and leaves. Not sure why.  Hopefully they won't be gone long....I'm decent at guilt trips.  We have begun work on our tower.

Update 10/1/21
Frantic Friday Edition  Busy room yesterday afternoon.  It was fun watching my team leader explore how we could frame in the intakes. He decided to try working off of the initial framing we have and see if he can make it work. He is using hot glue and staples to secure the pieces. They are thin. We discussed areas made out of plywood, but that adds too much thickness and weight to the overall project. I also wrote him a letter of recommendation this morning for the U.S. Senate Page Program. He is an impressive young man. It seems to be working ok, so far. I'm pretty impressed he's been able to get as far as he has so quickly and with as much success. l  He's taking measurements off of the 1/48th scale model and fitting them to our 1/4 scale model.   Robotics team working on the weapon's bay door mechanisms and designs. This student isn't enrolled in my class, but comes in everyday and works on the F-22. He's been an incredible help so far.  Tower work continues. We are cutting out 18 and 21" octagon frames to go around our pole. The 1x8" boards, all $100 of them, will cover the support pole and give us something to build off of.  The tier for our crashed BF-109 continues. Rock mix going on for a texture. We will add paint and grass soon.  Installing the hangar and painting around it. Students don't operate the lift. I use the base controls to raise them up, and then bring them back down....if they are good.   |

Update 10/5
We had a busy Monday. Touch up painting on the hangar and making sure the lights work with the power strip/outlet combo.  New cardboard down on the floor in the break out area, prepping for the fuselage move.  The F-14 getting masked off for white.   More work on the intake framing. We adjusted a couple pieces and made sure alignment was correct.   We think this is what we need. Matching it on the other side is always fun.  "Ribs" on the top of the fuselage continue.  My happy mural painters painting leaves...... I had a few opt out for the next few weeks, as they had had enough. Hopefully we get more in there soon.  We are beginning work on the canopy.  This keeps me up at night. Our plan is to create the form in foam, then cover with paper mache, to form a nice smooth skin. From there, we will try fiberglass, and create a shell. We hope to use two of those to press the canopy between them. We will see. There are many doubts that this will work. I probably need to order some very thin Lexan type material, and not attempt this with the 3/16ths" material available locally.   |

This is an ostrich egg. She is sculpting it with a dremel to look like a dragon egg with an embryo inside. There is a light she will also install.

Mooooooooore update for today.....
Our canopy sculpting is getting further defined.  More measuring to see where the contours need to be, then a bit more rasping before sanding. Students tonight we're saying, "It's really starting to look like a plane!" That was good to hear, as they were seemingly getting more excited about it. The framing and rework haa tired them of that process.  We had a bit of fixing to do on a few contours on the back of the fuselage, but we are close.  Our wings are just about ready to assemble.  My mechanical engineer is about ready to print the mounting plate for the door operating mechanism.   My hangar ceres has moved on to building and designing the tower. This was their work this morning. Later they started assembling the casing for the pole.   |

I'm going to give you a suggestion for your canopy. It's probably not "correct" but it will give you a cheat to make it easier.
If you make the foam as smooth as possible, and then put down a very smooth layer of fiberglass, then a thinned metallic gold layer, finally a final thick urathane layer to give it depth you could simulate the canopy that was used on the EA6-B Growler. They were an electronic warfare plane and when they were built they had a gold foil in the canopy to protect the crews from the radio-frequency radiation that the jammer equipment put out. Under certain lighting conditions the canopy looked opaque.  Attached File Attached File |

I like the idea for the coatings, though. If he can get his hand on a couple panels of thin Lexan I think heat guns, gloves, an a bit of patience would work, then dust the inside with the transparent gold color. Transparent gold gave me an idea - an auto body supply shot might help, if they mixed a wrong color but it's metallic gold and on sale for $3 or free since it didn't match what the customer wanted. Automotive paint is about 40% transparent once reduced and ready to spray. Going over the Lexan would put down metallic flake and the gold color, no clear coat needed if indoors and not touched. Other spray paints are designed to cover as much possible in one coat while auto body has 2-4 coats to make those deep metallic awesome finishes. I don't know what they're planning for the cockpit view though, it would need to be a VERY fine and even dusting of the gold to have it get the coated glass look and still be able to see the pilot shenanigans. |

For the canopy material look at what is used for RC bodies. That material can be vacuum formed. Something else for the crew to look into. It is a lot thinner that 3/16". |
