I will try to figure out if we can make the C-130 direction a bit more obvious. I need to get a student back on that after we get everyone settled. I thought I'd share this. This Junior Duck Stamp entry might be a serious contender this year. She won the Wyoming contest last year. This is a watercolor painting. 9x12"  We are working to make the smoke clouds be less "tree-like" and a little bit more billowy.  Our horizontal stabilizer got skinned yesterday. There was a slight accident with the wing tip....... They told me about it after they fixed it.   We are adding foam around the wing root, front and back, and will work to start sculpting the angles soon.  A student was not happy with how the nose contour looks, so we are recontouring it, and will recover it after we have it a bit more refined.  The contouring around the landing gear pods is almost done. We needed the final bit of skin applied so we could get a bitter idea of how the contours meet the main fuselage.  We are continuing to skin the aft portion of the fuselage. It is going well, and the students have an excellent system going to get everything pretty clean.  Our firefighter's neck was repainted. We will probably get him dressed again next week. The oil paint needs a few days to dry.  His face got it's first coat of gold paint. We will cover the entire portrait first, then apply oil paint over top for the patina. We will probably do the eyes more lifelike. I need to steel his glasses. My buddy better watch them close tonight when I'm over there for dinner.

Serious Wow action going on here. I've never seen a French Impressionist duck stamp painting before. That is an incredibly good painting. There aren't many budding artists that can make a go of things, but whoever painted that can.

My school district has been very supportive in funding, and allowing me free reign with my program. Arfcom had made an incredible difference in the program overall. No way it would be where it is without all of your help and support through out the last 10yrs. The ideas and donated tools/funds from arfcom have been monumental to the program.

Monday came quick!  This is the beginning of our Smokejumper cloud. It will hang from the ceiling. The axle and motor will run along this, with holes through it, so the spools can wind up and sown our smokejumpers that have the chutes out.  More work on recontouring the top of the nose.  We also started cutting out some of the lower windows under the cockpit. There will be some thinning of the foam walls as we proceed.  More details being laid out along the fuselage.  Contours along the top edge of the tail are going well.  The wing root contours have slowed a bit. I keep running out of volunteers for this part.  I believe we are almost ready for paper mache along the landing gear pods.  Skinning the aft portion of the fuselage is a back and fourth effort. We get one section done, then mess up the next, then repeat.  The top of the horizontal stabilizer is looking good. They have a good handle on the process.  Our firefighters face is just about completely gold, and ready for the oil patina. That will start today.  The scars on his forehead came out pretty spot on.

Brushed on, then blotted with a towel to remove some of the paint and remove the brush strokes. It leaves a bronzelike finish. This will look better than if we try for a realistic finish.

Update 1/10
Our wing had success yesterday in getting structurally organized, and pretty straight.... mostly. We also began cutting out patterns for the engine cowling contours.  I need to pick up a few straight 2x2s today and nails to use as rivets this morning. We then should see some real progress.  The wing root foam is coming out nicely.   We thinned out the cockpit area quite a bit yesterday.   More lower windows also laid out and cut out. We will remove most of the foam that is showing on the edges today.  First layers of paper mache are going down on the landing gear pods, even though I think we still need to remove a bit of material from the bottom leading edge.  3D printed spool for our smokejumper rigging.  Our skinning near the tail continues. We had a few hiccups yesterday, but I think we are making progress; ever so slowly. These contours are difficult to get without creases in the skin. Light spray with water helps the drawing board flex without creasing, most of the time.  More foam at the base of the vertical stabilizer.  They whipped out the skin on the underside of the horizontal stabilizer yesterday.  More smoke added above the fire.  We thought we lost the note with our measurements on it, but we found it under my desk.  Hopefully we understand how we need to fold the top portion of the chute, and where to glue to get the 3D filled area between the two layers.

Update 1/11
Lots going on the last few days. The portrait patina is going fast now. Eye details are happening. Oil on thick, then blotted off with a towel   Pretty freaky with the whites of the eyes only, and not subdued. We will add gold to outer edges of the eyes, then more details.   Eventually, gloss will be added to finish the eyes.  Cutting out port holes on the fuselage takes precision. Making circles ....round, is not as easy as you would think. They used a dremel after initially using an exacto knife to get out the majority.    Wing root was very close to being done, but we still have a bit at the bottom to blend in to the rounded contour.  We are still doing well with the tail skinning. We are going to skin the vertical stabilizer in panels matching the rivet lines on the 1/48 scale model we have.  We began paper mache over the cockpit area of the fuselage yesterday.  We have a few more ceramic birds that might get added, so we added a non burned limb to the display. We may move the others to this too. We will see.  They started thinning out the smoke on the edges, feathering it a bit. Paint will be next.  This is the CAD drawing for our smokejumper cloud display. We think we need to make the larger spools, a bit bigger to get the rabid movement we need to see in the 1/6th smokejumpers. They will probably be printed in 2 pieces like we did on the Space Tractor transmission. Our beds aren't big enough to print much more than 6" wheels.   |

You're getting very good at smoke effect on the wall!
Cutting circles really sucks, they even make X-acto knives that have a swivel tip and a smaller blade to cut circles easier but I don't know how you'd set the radius or move it. I have a bunch of punches and hole drills, they did very good with the manually cut 2-4" holes down the side of the body, they look perfectly punched. How many times have you had to pull foam and start over on some of these parts? I remember "wing root foam needing fixing" happening 2 or 3 times. Is it just a bunch of blocks glued onto the old blocks and rasped down again? It's looking awesome, though that one bird I'd move a bit further up the branch from the fire, I don't think they are that dumb, but it could just be a perspective thing where it looks like he's sitting 6" from hot coals. Could also have some squirrels and other homeless critters in the area, maybe just one. This is turning out amazing, hopefully it gets Finished this school year yet. |

Yesterday soaked up a few of my artists working on a fellow student's moose. I had one student, who graduated at semester, fly back from TX, where he's been hanging out before Basic Training, to work on this.
He bought a ticket on Monday.  Anyway, they did a nice job. We will finish up details today, and get it prepped for drying out over the weekend. Moose are incredibly huge, and the skin is not easy to sew. We thinned out the cape along the sewing, knowing this, and it still took a long time, and some bloody fingers.  |

Update 1/12
We began cutting and shaping porthole windows yesterday out of lexan. There was a discussion about setting these now, or waiting till paint was all finished. We decided to set the now, and tape them off for painting. That may be a mistake, but I was overruled. That's the story I'm telling. There is a detailed vent near the front of the fuselage that this young man is working on. He worked on several of the vents on the F-22 last year, and wanted to work on this one.   Working to finish the skin on the bottom of the landing gear pod.  The complex contours of the wing root, continue.  We got some paper mache on the nose of the C-130. We will continue to clean up our edges a bit with the paper mache.  Our wing structure started getting screwed together yesterday. We have a bit of a fitment issue with the aft spar, but we will fix that today. It sticks too far down on the wing ribs.  It's nice to finally see a wing going together.  This morning, inspection of our 1st chute showed we are getting the firmness in the fabric that we were after. We will add more Elmer's glue to it today to get it to set the shape before we then add the top layer of the chute.  My artist finished the eye details yesterday and started adding layers of gloss over top. She also added a bit of lightening to our firefighter's teeth.  |

Update 1/12.2
A big shout out to Sherwin-Williams of Cody, WY. Thank you again for all of your help with this project!They helped us with our paint this year, as they did last year. We were discussing the 2022 & 2023 Color Of The Year that they promote nationally, and decided it would be fun to include those colors somewhere in our display this year. These were delivered to my porch last night... Along with the color donations, THE coveted "Native" sunglasses that will finish off our firefighter's portrait. I'm showing a closeup of these glasses, so as not to be burned at the stake at what we have to do to them to fit our ceramic portrait.   What are the Colors of the Year? Glad you asked....  Evergreen Fog is the 2022 color of the year.  Redend Point is the 2023 color of the year.

Update 1/12.3
More Native Eyewear adjustment. So, because we didn't have a set of glasses as we were sculpting.....we could have had any set.... we were off a bit. To remedy this, we have to make the frames fit behind the ears...kind of.We cut off the ends of the frames.  We marked where they need to be to look normal, then began cutting away the sculpture for the frame sides.  We will glue the ends of the frames back in place behind the ears.

It was a long struggle to get this done, but IT finally approved and installed the TV my principal ordered for us to share photos of the build with everyone. Robotics will be adding a video to the images, and it will play in a slideshow loop, as it is cureently. Every project display will be getting this set up.

As for the paint of the year, I'm really befuddled by the paint size. 29.5 floz. Normally you get those odd bits from it being some even metric measure, but it's 872.4 ml How do the get 29.5 floz? Only thing I could possibly think of is 2 physical pounds of paint ends up being that much liquid or something. Maybe it started off as a 32oz can or something and they just make it a half ounce less every year and keep the price the same. |

That will leave room for up to 2.5 oz of added colors when they custom mix the color at the store. * I am not a Sherwin Williams employee, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. |

Little Moose update.
As our moose dries, students will continue to adjust the eye lids as they shrink and move. We will begin pulling pins at the latter part of next week. Paint and epoxy will follow.

Update 1/13
Our firefighter is again dressed and ready for adding his head.  Once we finish fitting the glasses, we will start messing with the back of our firefighter's head. We think we are going to do this in plaster, as it won't shrink like ceramic will.  Getting closer to fitting like we want.  The wing root is close to finished on the aft side, but my sculptor is gone for wrestling in MT. today.  We are working on adding more to the foam/body of the fuselage tail.   The nose is ready for paper mache.   Skinning on the tail continues.  My wing crew adjusted the depth of the spar on the ribs. I was hoping to see more done by today.  The glue seems to be working well on our chute.  We either miscalculated how much material we needed for our upper chute, or we made the vertical portions bigger than we first thought. We are adding a bit more material before adding wires to the structure.  |
