Update 12/8
Our parachute is still going as planned. This is the bottom of the chute.  The firefighter is getting closer to our bronze statue look that we want. We will hit it with oil paint for the bronze look that we are after.  Mural work is going well.  The roof of our lookout tower is slowly progressing. We need to discuss what's going inside soon. Probably should have been on that a bit earlier.   Lining up the foam on our tail.  Sculptors/shapers did this much quicker this time.  We are closer on our rudder, but the skin came off again this morning so we could knock down the ends of the ribs a bit more.  We are going to try to get the C-130 up on our taxidermy stands for a bit. We need to access both inside and outsides of the airframe, and think this may be a good way to do it.  |

Can you do a panorama pic of the alcove? Should be an option for photo type on your Phone where you pick photo/panorama/video/etc and it makes a really wide image after you turn in a circle with it.

Update 12/9
Frantic Friday Edition..... We have a very large wrestling tournament going on here today and tomorrow, so we are missing more students than usual. I think we went backwards today as far as skinning our bird.  Every time I turned around, we were "fixing" skin areas, not putting new skin on. We did get the fuselage up on the taxidermy stands yesterday. It's given us some nice views of the contours we weren't seeing. It also showed us that we have a little droop in the tail, as it twists from the weight of only having the right stabilizer. We will work to make that more solid.    Working on the wing root contour. We will add foam back in, and sculpt this area, but first we needed to get rid of the flat face.   Rock pedestal added to our display area.  Couple of our smoke jumpers will be on this ledge looking back at the fire. This is one of our very own Arfcomers and one of my former students @Sparks556 .....   Mr. Munger(Chemistry teacher) is on the right. Both will be adjusted a bit, and Sparks won't be wearing his mohawk helmet, but holding it.  Smoke going up above our fire.

 We had kind of a down day today. Finals are next week, and students needed directions for their digital portfolios. We did get a few more areas skinned, but found we needed a little clean up on the edges of the fuselage next to the wall. We will have some decent updates tomorrow.

Update 12/13
Going to be a bit of a short week for me. I'm heading out on Thursday to see my oldest receive his PHD in Electrical Engineering from U. of Michigan. If our IT dept can ever get the blueray player to work off of my PC, kids will watch "Always" for a few days, and work on their portfolios; so progress on our project will be light. I know a few will figure out ways to be down here working as they always do. Mural is looking good. We talked about being careful to have the yellows fade a bit from the reflection of light in the photo.   More "water" features. Some of my students are not wild about this section right now. We are hoping with a few more features, it becomes more favorable. "literal/realism" and "abstract representationalism" are two terms we are trying to learn, in areas like this.  Our smokejumpers are a little more posed like we would like.   A few more smoke clouds have been added.  Some of my artists have begun figuring out where details on the front of the fuselage need to be. I think we need to square up some of our lines, but we will start cutting out windows soon.  We again removed skin in some places that we had "done". Pretty sure they are screwing with me now.We did get a tough section behind the door on there with minimal problems.  Our firefighter got a few more undershirts on to build him up a bit and keep him from looking a bit too thin. We are ready to bondo the skull base to the inside of our ceramic portrait. We should get to that today.  Not sure how successful our parachute is going. We had a bit of a misunderstanding about the lengths of the outer wires. We are figuring out what needs to happen to keep our shape set. We are adding grommets right now, and will work to hang it upside down, then add some glue to the fabric to hold the shape a bit better. We may have to run a few more cross wires like a tent to get it to hold perfectly. |

Update 12/14
Students did well yesterday. We've tackled a few problems with success. We discussed "institutional knowledge" yesterday when arguing about skinning the C-130. I'm lucky to have several students who have been on at least two previous skinning fuselage/hull projects, so they were there to back me up when other students wanted to try skinning our bird slightly differently. The experienced students were able to explain the pitfalls that were suggested, as they experienced them first hand. This is a tough area with the conical shape around the tail section of the fuselage, and it's going very well.    We are tweaking the landing gear pods just a bit, but they are getting closer and closer to correct.  We decided to reinforce the back ball edge of the fuselage, so we don't damage the skin when moving it around. This just allows us to attach the skin to a hard edge all the way across the fuselage.  The tail rudder is fulling skinned and we cleaned up the back edge a bit. Rivets will follow.  A student asked what we had left to do to the C-130, as it looked "almost done". My answer, as I know you all will rejoice..... rivets...... and a wing, and engines...... and details. We began getting furniture made for our lookout tower. We now have the start of an oven.  Bronze firefighter is getting more bronze.  |

Update 12/15
Airport terminal edition: Looks like out showing of "Always" failed. It apparently can only be shown on my login......and I'm not there. These guys are reinforcing the wall side of the fuselage and adding foam to the tail contour.  Our team leader working to fix the skin under the doorway. I may have to rig up one of those mechanics floor scooter for him.  Foam added under the wing root.    Close to contoured out.  Our base parachute skin. We are going to work on the smaller 1/18th scale for a bit, till I can get back and buy more material.  We went to put our ceramic portrait on the mannequin and found that from shrinking during firing, it does not fit quite right, so the Sawzall made another entrance.  It now fits, and we will work to make it stabile and the back of the brain covered up.  Kinda creepy.

Wyoming weather may cut this short week, even shorter. We are expecting -50 windchill tomorrow. They've decided to have all finals today, and start classes at a 2hr delay tomorrow. Since finals are today, we would have all day tomorrow to work on the project. I got most of the students' porfolios emailed to me yesterday, so most will be able to work on their projects today. |

I just drove my wife to work......a whole 1 block away from our house. It is crazy dangerous right now. Zero visibility. I had a tough time seeing the parked cars in her parking lot....all three of them. Oncoming traffic is impossible to see till its right in front of you. Turning left.....damn.

Agreed on that. As soon as it hits -10 or so it starts to sting when you breathe so seeking shelter is very wise. After 5-15 minutes people not fully bundled in insulation start going into hypothermia feeling and thinking it's not so bad or even warm, then you really need to get in some place warm. |

Update 1/5/2023 WE ARE BACK!
SPRING SEMESTER IS UNDERWAY! Students will be mixed up for the most part, and in new sections, so it will be interesting to see how the new combinations of students work together. I'm looking forward to seeing it. Sometimes leaders have to allow other leaders to also lead, and in other cases, students have to step up into a leadership position in their section. We have a ton of great kids in several sections. It should be fun.Where we sit today..... Our fuselage is close to being finished skinning. We will start adding rivets and more details soon. We still need to build a wing.  Our roof is close to being finished on our lookout tower, but we still need furniture inside.  Our forest fire smoke will continue.  We have plenty of water effects to add to our stream.  We will have a few more ceramic birds to add to the display; probably not too these burned pieces. We may add some non burned pieces.  Mural details like the slurry bomber will continue. We need to finish the sky in several areas.  We should be getting our firefighter's head on soon. I hope. Our tshirt design will need a bit of tweaking before we are ready for the annual fundraiser. |

Thanks for the status update. I have one comment on the t-shirt. If that C-130 is doing a slurry drop, the left wing should be obscured by the slurry. From the perspective presented, you'd be looking through the plume. |

The way I see it the plane is crossing from left to right and the observer is at about the 4 to 5 o'clock position. More or less this angle.
