Update 8/24/22
The first real day is under our belts. Students were excited to do more than read through a class syllabus.  Someone wanted to say hi to ARFCOM. Nora is in my class and already working on the project. She's doing great and said she gets some tests soon so she can operate power tools again. She said she kept the cards you all sent and has them in a keepsake box.   We did some brainstorming and sketching out so everyone knows where the parts of the display are going to be located. They convinced me to move our slurry bomber and I like where we are going to have it. They came up with some excellent ideas to add to the display, and ingenious ways to create some of our affects. The fire gear and uniform are now going to have to have a mannequin to be posed in, and we even have a face picked put to go on it.  I need a pair of Native sun glasses to complete the look, but the students are stoked. We will add our own sculpted face portrait. We discussed mannequins and what we need, and I think we have one picked out. Not too expensive. We will have to do a bit of alterations to it, but I think it's manageable. The fully posable versions are just too expensive and I'm not sure we need all of that movement. Students got the dimensions for the lookout tower figured out and we should begin cutting parts out tomorrow. The tiered ledges to hold much of our display will also get started tomorrow.

Your B-24 is actually a Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer. B-24 has dual vertical stabs and the Privateer has a single stab.

Nothing wrong with a Privateer - the only flying one in North America is right up the street from me.
 Of course, wrong one for what you want, but a fine plane. I see a few examples in your boneyard photos.

Update 8/26 Frantic Friday Edition!
We will be doing ladder safety today, so not much else will get done. We are still waiting on our Amazon orders. They should have been here this week, but the central office admin approval didn't happen till sometime this week.  I gotta call out a couple awesome ARFCOMERs again. This community is incredibly generous. Seriously. Crazy generous. @UncleEric & @Frank_B THANK YOU BOTH!!! These showed up in the mail yesterday. The look on the office staff faces is always fun to see, and the inevitable question...."who are these people."  Yesterday, we figured out the footprint of each of the corner exhibits. We then cut those out and took them down to the display room to see how high and low we needed to go when building off of them.   After the initial footprint, we started altering them so they didn't look too geometric. We probably could have done this originally, but we got all 3 corners out of one sheet, and can add and subtract with pieces to get what we want. It's a couple extra steps, but it saves us at east 1 whole sheet of plywood. The 2x4s will be the beginnings of our framework to attach to the wall.  Our framework for around the support pole is also underway. We cut the holes a little big, so we will have to remake the smaller cut outs to fit around the pole a little tighter. We don't want people to accidentally kick the base and have it move, and attaching it to the pole is not on our possibilities, so we will fit it tight around the pole.  |

Update 8/29
On Friday, we got our V cuts done for the mounting plates that will attach our display tiers to the walls. We will have corresponding 2x4s with the same cuts mirrored, and bolted to the walls. This will allow us to set the display tiers up and over the 2x4s bolted to the walls and allow us to then drive construction screws down through both sets to secure them in place.   We are working on the base for our lookout tower, making sure it fits securely around the pole, and is beefy enough that it will survive being run into, kicked, and bumped at the base.   Our 8 1/4" collars for the pole were a little too loose, so we are cutting new ones that are a little more snug.  We got the beginnings of our support pieces on, just at the end of the very short day. Several of the tiers will also have structure going up, to create a mountain like look, and allow us to create some perspective in the display.

Update 8/29.2
Students are getting into the swing of the project today. We are starting to see things taking an actual shape and form. The base of our lookout tower. We will cover this with stone work.   We opened up the paint buckets and started rolling paint on this morning. We will get a base coat down, then detail in the blending and details later.   These are the bottoms of our display tiers, and need to be supported a bit so they can't easily be crushed, if bumped. Chicken wire will cover them, then paper mache, but with canvas for added strength.  This tier will be where we display our fire, trees, and 3D smoke. This is the top, and needs to look like a hillside. On each flat spot we will have 3D trees; smaller trees towards the top, our 4-5' trees at the bottom left. We are looking at this from the wall side.

Fork of the Shoshone River on the way to Yellowstone's East Entrance. I can't imagine fighting fires without all the technology and communications we have today. I was taking a class for wildlands training with our local fire chief, and we discussed what went wrong in many of the tragedies. I will see if we can include something in the display to honor them. The kids can relate to Granite Mountain crew a little easier because of the recent movie. |

Investigations and analysis of the event led the USFS to develop better ways to provide a more immediate response to combat fires; one of them was the development of the smokejumper program in 1939. Update 8/31
@Frank_B THANK YOU FOR THE ARDUINO KIT!!!!  Base coat of paint on the walls is going well. Students used brushes to blend the color bands together and create a more smoke like look to it.    We covered up some of our animals so we don't get any paint on them.  Our landscape tiers are about done with construction and chicken wire. We will add a canvas skin over top, then texture, and paint.  We are having fun.....even when we are a little late with a pass...  We cut holes into the corners so we can run power up through the bottoms. We are hoping to have lights up to create the look of a wildlands fire.  This base is the hill our "hotshot crew" will be working up.   Some of our "Smoke Jumpers" have arrived!   At first, students were laughing at our "Action figures", and that we are using them in "Art".  After stripping them down, we discussed the best way to get the jump suits to a pale yellow. We are using acrylic paint with water. It seems to be getting us the results we need. Hopefully they won't be too stiff to get back on to our figures.  We also discussed how we would change hair styles, color, and accessories.  These will be the posts for our lookout tower.

Update 9/1 September! We made it! Wait.....it's only.....
Mural smoke and sky are going well.   Jump suits are looking decent so far. We still have 3 that haven't been worked on yet, so we could always alter the method if this doesn't turn out as well as hoped. I think we are going to be good, though.  Students started on the B-26, but we may put it aside and start on the C-130, as it arrived late yesterday afternoon.   The lookout tower started really forming up yesterday.  We began making staircases on each level.   The canvas skin going on to the landscape tiers went pretty well yesterday. The glue is a bit more runny than students would have liked. We will see how it cures.  Our life size firefighter arrived yesterday afternoon, also. We began modifying it immediately.  This does not look like our firefighter....  We are going to modify the stance a bit.  Today should be a fun day. Lots going on in this whirlwind. |

It should be here Tuesday. I'm hoping it's crusty and used, but we can make whatever work.  No idea on a specific crew, but it seems that might be a great way to recognize the Ten Sleep CCC guys that perished in the Blackwater Fire of 1937. If you've got ideas share them. They are doing a great job of diving into the projects. I've had many down here already during their free time, working on the mural and staircases. I think many find it stress relieving.
