I think it's also good performance level for fun, safe, competitive racing... That's highly maintainable and available. The Elise... Is what it is, it might be a little faster, but it's a glued together tub with some fiberglass panels screwed on made out of unobtanium parts and quite frankly I'm surprised they were able to sell them as long as they did in the US. It was fun to drive though, there's not a lot like it and their won't ever will be again sold for the street. |

When I retired from the Navy I bought myself a sporty car.
I started out to buy a convertible and test rode most of them through the city I lived in and then on a short on ramp/off ramp on the freeway with each. I put the top up and down and drove in traffic. Of the rag tops I test drove the most impressive was the Porsche Boxster S followed by the 911. I came to the conclusion I didn't like other people's exhausts, music, and smoke as much as I thought I would so I bought a hard top sporty car and a convertible SUV. The Porsches were clearly connected to the road yet had manners in traffic and on the pot hole and speed bump prone side streets. They felt better crossing the rail-road tracks. Uniquely their tops came insulated. I don't know if that's a SoCal thing or the other manufactures just don't do the felt liners. In the heat of the day the black top of a convertible converts all that sunlight into heat really quickly, the roof was scorching hot in some rides. On the freeway the Boxster's 3.2 was fast from 25 to 65 mph and the brakes never felt challenged. Only the Nissan 350Z's brakes felt better. The 997 I test drove wasn't turbo but did have a 6-speed manual and I would love to know just how fast that thing could go. Unfortunately my right foot (and the left foot too) isn't as smart as they should be. |

My Dad has a '96 Z3 that he's owned since 1996; he did the Euro delivery as he was stationed in Germany at the time, despite the car being built in South Carolina. It's still in absolutely beautiful condition and he loves that car. The first model year cars were all I4s; it has something like 130hp. Doesn't matter, it's still stupid fun to drive. |

What about the Mercedes C & E and SLK series soft top and the hardtop convertible models? Even some slightly older SLs are in the 30-40K price range. Not much mention of those so far. Are some of those models OK or all they financial suicide?

I think it was top gear that said the design team spent a ton of time in Monaco/French Riviera "studying" sailing and yachts to come up with the styling. I really think it might be the ugliest thing Toyota has released, with the third gen tundra being a solid second place. |

depending on your styling, consider the RF (retractable top) It's essentially a T-top Most fun you'll have in a car for the price and it punches above its weight class in terms of performance, especially in the suspension. sure you could get a porsche but the second you break something in it (and you WILL), have fun with those repair bills. |

Even the ND only has 16" or 17" wheels from the factory. Compare tire prices between a Miata and something like a Corvette. The Miata is much, much cheaper to buy tires for, and they last much longer for a number of reasons. |

OP, here’s a little heads up on owning a convertible in SC. In the spring time, you’re lucky to get a week before pollen dust storms start. After the heavy pollen stops, you get a few more weeks of enjoyment before the summer heat is just too damned hot to drive around with the top down. If pollen doesn’t bother you, it will get in every crack, crevice, radio dials, buttons, CD slots, cloth seats (yea, cloth seats are better in a convertible and definitely not a black interior) trim, up in the dash defrost vents, etc. See where this is going? Don’t put the top down during pollen season.
Fall is convertible season in SC. If you see anyone in SC driving around in the summertime during the daytime with the top down, it’s a new car to them. Wintertime, new car. Summertime, after the sun sets and still running the AC it’s pretty nice. Again, avoid a black interior or leather/vinyl. The burn is real. I’ve had a couple convertibles in my lifetime. Last was a ‘95 Mustang GT. Slow as hell, but a fun car for a short time during the year. When it got totaled out it was a tough decision to not go back with a convertible, but I was tired of dropping $1200 buying new tops every 5 years. Just finding a shop that still does them is a task all in its own. Oh, and never, ever, ever use any top cleaner that contains bleach. About the time I got my last top I had found a great cleaner and protectant that kept my top looking new for years. Never, ever park under trees either. They drop sap so small you cannot see it until it starts turning black and green. Good luck and enjoy it! On occasion I really miss not having the ability to put the top down. |

S2000 is first choice followed by an NA or ND.2 Miata.

Can't go wrong with a Miata. It's affordable, reliable, and fun. I'd recommend the ND because it is a modern car while the NC is an early 2000s design and the NA/NB are 1980s cars. The RF hardtop looks nice, but the soft top is so simple and give you much more of the open air experience. The ND got a nicer engine for 2019, so look for that if possible.

I have a BMW 328i convertible with the M3 sport package. Unfortunately it doesn't have the engine. But it handles like a go-kart. And they can be got cheap. And still easy to work on
