Typhoon damage.  It's why we went to the British style hurricane bow like on the HMS Ark Royal or HMS Illustrious:

Ark Royal

HMS Illustrious

It's not that we weren't aware of the hull going up to the flight deck.  We did that with the earlier carriers, Lexington and Saratoga.  This is the Lady Lex before WW II.  Note the twin 8" gun turrets that gave her the firepower of a heavy cruiser:

Wow. Here's an image of the Lexington, Saratoga and the Langley (CV-1) before part of her flight deck was removed to convert her into a seaplane tender (AV-3).

Don't remember ever seeing this one in years, so I am posting it.
LIFE magazine, 1944, Belgium - German spies being executed by US MPs.

Please note how rifles are all M1903s (and I have to say, all M1903-A1-style, with older style rear sight etc.).

Incredible shot taken while executing the prisoners (after trial).

Skorzeny's boys?  Good! Wear the other side's uniform and you can get shot for it.  BTW, in Korea my uncle had to take the repaired fighters up to test them for airworthiness.  His C.O. suggested he wear civvies.  My uncle refused and said he wasn't going to be set up as a spy.

Wood hull subchaser.

There was an incident where a subchaser was camouflaged to appear like a baby flattop.  She even had some miniature aircraft to complete her camouflage.

Wearing the enemy's uniform is a legitimate ruse du guerre and is not,in and of itself, punishable by death.

Love this picture so much I can't even tell you.
It's universal, timeless.

It seems eternal. Such an incredible gesture - natural and peaceful while he's ready to lay it on the line.

Amazing.

What are the spirals on the nose cones for?  ID?

USS Pawnee.  She was towing the crippled USS Houston whose engine room had been flooded earlier by a torpedo hit when they were attacked by Japanese torpedo planes flying out of Formosa (Taiwan).  The Japs suceeded in putting another torpedo into the Houston, flooding her further.  The skipper of the Pawnee could either cut the tow line and save his boat or continue towing the Houston with the threat of the latter taking her under.  Every sailor aboard the Houston knew it.  The Pawnee signaled, "We will stand by you."  Small ship, brave men.

Here is the CL-81 Houston, a Cleveland class light cruiser.

Looks like 1941 - note the helmets and boots - helmet decals started phase out for national colors around 1940 so you will see the mix of with/without during invasion of Russia
and 42 onwards you'll see almost no army helmet decals  and lace-up boots started becoming the norm
also note the dark collars on some but not others - again an approx 1940 change
looks like the gunner has a Czech bayonet - this isn't very unusual

German soldiers in a posed photo on or soon after the invasion of Tallinn, the capitol of Estonia, 28th August 1941.

German forces started the Tallinn Offensive on 19 August 1941, capturing Rapla on 21st August. They reached Tallinn outskirts in Pirita on 24th August and Harku and Lasname on 26th August.
Ordinary citizens were ordered to build defences around Tallinn. Soviet forces started evacuating by sea on 24th August. Of the 195 ships, that left Tallinn and Paldiski, 55 were sunk by mines near Juminda Peninsula, killing around 15,000 evacuees. Evacuating Soviet forces destroyed much of the infrastructure and industry around Tallinn.
German forces captured Paldiski and Tallinn on 28th August, shooting down the Soviet Flag on Tallinn Pikk Hermann Tower. Estonians replaced it with the Flag of Estonia, but it was replaced with the Flag of Germany the next day.
German forces were greeted as liberators in Tallinn. It was also the first time since 1219 that Tallinn had been captured by a military engagement.

Possibly US Army in Normandy? The Army issued some troops with camo helmet covers there, until recalling them due to the fear that they'd be confused with German camo patterns.
