So true.
Also, chilling images on the post above, seeing those Germans ready to fire with MG42/MG34s.
After what I read about them, every time they freeze the blood in my veins.

Hence posting another German effort (wasted, thankfully) - by the end of the war, circa August 1944.

Very cool.   Freeman Field has a great little museum and unfortunately not many folks realize the part it played in the war for enemy aircraft evaluation.

Heavy Cruisers firing at the Japanese force at the Battle Of Surigao Strait, one of the four main actions in the Battle Of The Philippine Sea

This engagement was last time, in a classic maneuver from before the days of Nelson at Trafalgar, the "T" was crossed in Naval Warfare.

The enemy, led by two Pagoda-superstructure IJN Battleships Yamashiro and Fuse (elegant seaworthy vessels) is caught steaming through the Strait perpendicular to our Task Group.

The enemy ships can bring only their forward turrets to bear yet our ships are firing broadsides from all available turrets.

This action also saw brilliant US Destroyer night torpedo attacks prior to the heavy gunnery phase.

Seen here in a formal portrait ca 1944 with his Field Marshall's Baton, Blue Max and Knights Cross (with at least Oak Leaves & Swords), Rommel was perhaps the most respected widely known Axis enemy of World War II (Admiral Yamamoto perhaps second)

He ordered German artillery to suspend fire during afternoon British tea time in North Afrika, it was just good manners

Some others of his stature and reputation for honorable conduct were not nearly as widely known

General Omar Nelson Bradley was the longest lived of the very few who were elevated to 5 star rank, he passed away during Reagan's 1st Administration IIRC

His "A Soldiers Story" is not nearly the quality/scope of work as Churchill's 6 Volume treatise but remains vital reading for any comprehensive autobiographical study of WWII
