True, but had they been able to keep Ploesti from being bombed and secured the fuel, I think they might have had a few who could have taken some up and caused a little trouble |

Of course if the British socialists hadn’t given Stalin the Nene a few years later,American fighter development would have very,very rapidly outpaced the Soviets and there wouldn’t have been much of a contest over MiG Alley. |

P-75 Eagle (but not really
 )  ETA: Story goes that the Army wanted GM to tool up and build B-29s but GM saw the that the war was ending and didn't want to make the investment. So, they ginned up this goofy plane and convinced the Army they were too busy to make B-29s because of this super-fighter they had in development. ETA: It had P-51 wings, P-40 landing gear, tail from some other plane. The powerplant was basically two P-40 engines joined together and driving contra-rotating props. |

Twin engine contra-rotating pusher prop:  Dual propulsion:  Then reworked to be jet powered only, the US's first jet bomber:  Articulating rear facing guns would pop out of the wing for defense:
