I need a bigger one so I’m looking around. Not a mechanic so it doesn’t need to be the best of the best.
I have one Snap On setup and three Kennedy machinist boxes.
The Icon line at Harbor Freight seem decent for the home owner or backyard mechanic. I've been kicking around getting one and trying it out. Something like this.. Attached File (Not my photo) |
Us general works great for me as a DIY mechanic. Of course, they’re a little more expensive now versus 3-4 years ago.
Any ideas for something ~40”-48” wide but no more than 36” tall?
I have a server rack mounted to the wall above the boxes so in order to open the top box I can’t have the bottom box be more than 36”-37” tall at the most. |
Ive had a US General tool box at work for over 10 years. A little dirty but still 100%.
Husky had some huge ones at Home Depot on Black Friday/ Christmas, both top/bottom sets and bench only.
Don't forget to plan on how you'll get the monster home and out of the vehicle. I drove around with a 48" bottom and top chest in the back of my Yukon for a few weeks until i got a set of ramps and gave up on my brother helping me, so I told my wife she was on duty one freezing cold Saturday. Now i have a 30" set in my shed empty, taking up room until i build my garage addition. Kharn |

I have the 26" setup. works good for me. Attached File
Some Scotch 35+ in blue on the handles for a custom look. |

I have the 54" setup.
The bottom one weighs like 340 lbs. They are the real deal. They are closer to Snap-On than Craftsman in terms of quality. |
Has anyone blocked the wheels (or built a pedestal) and used one as a reloading bench?
What about this Husky set as an alternative?

Also, they have the boxes (and everything else) on sale thru Dec 26 for 20% off if you have the inside track membership. I think the membership is like $30. The boxes don't go on sale like that very often.
I have the 44" set up. Bottom, Top, side drawers, and cabinet for over 3 years now all well made. Sits in a non-heated garage. No rust, looks like new.
F the Snap-on snobs, |
There’s a bunch of them popping up at my work, especially the ‘carts’ with a couple drawers and the open bottom. 15 years ago they were pretty awful and I went with a craftsman, but they have come a long way and if I needed something today they would be my first stop.
Was going to buy a 26” bottom until I ran up on a deal for a craftsman 52” that had the back dented. $180.

Buy with confidence OP. 56 inch top and bottom. Saved lil over $300 on both with the 20% off coupon in December 2021 Attached File Someone said multiple purchases, that is correct. They let me make two separate purchases using the 20% off each item. |

Home Depot used to have some killer deals, but they really jacked up their prices. HF is definitely the place to go.
