So the guy sent the upper assembled but nothing was tightened?

If it were my business I'd have just pinned it and sent it back.

I assume the disassmbly/reassemble charge is for having to mount it in a vise, get out tools use anti-seize, torque the barrel nut, provide new crush washer etc.

If all you need to do is spin the barrel nut and muzzle device off by hand, I don't think that really qualifies as "disassembly".

I agree 100% the guy can't read and follow instructions though, but it's not a hill I would die on.

Did it require more than a tap of a hammer?

I kinda see his side as far as ease of shipping. Dependent on ease of “disassembly”.

Edit: note wasn’t posted. Yeah, you’re NTA.

Why would somebody disassemble an upper, kind of half-ass screw it together, then send in the whole thing to get the gas block drilled and pinned?  Wouldn't it make more sense to send only the barrel?

And if you're dedicated to putting it together yourself, why not install the gas block yourself too?  Save yourself $55 + shipping

He is pinning the gas block and also installing knurled set screws.  That's a bit pointless.

I guarantee if you did exactly what he asked, he would then complain about something else and blame something wrong on you.

I have had this customer before.

I'm torn on this one.  It's a few minutes to disassemble an upper, so you could save yourself some heartburn... But at the same time, if you do it once, this dunce is going to expect free service every time he sends something in.

I'm glad I don't do gunsmithing for profit anymore... Too stressful dealing with gun owners, especially lazy ones that won't pin their own gas block.

Your directions need to be more clear, they are too difficult to understand.  "All you need to send is the barrel and gas block." That is definitely not clear enough.  I dont know if I need to include the upper receiver, a pair of mismatched socks, a half eaten ham sandwich.  I cannot figure this out. Your business is terrible!

I don't agree with this take. Disassembly is dissasembly, and that's a fee. Furthermore, if Steve dissasembles it and then returns it in the same manner it was sent to him, what happens to Steve's liability as a professional gunsmith when that dipshit doesn't put everything back together right and he loses an eye when it blows up on him? No, it comes fully disassembled and sent back that way, or it comes fully assembled, Steve disassembles it for a fee, and it goes back to the customer fully and properly assembled.

Meh lame reasoning.  I msg Adco about an aem5 made by Ron.  He said he had one.  I said sold!  He sent me a bill and I paid asap.  I have an old yahoo account that I use.

Refund money and hold onto upper until he mails you a cashiers check for return costs.

Maybe add one of those bot filters like "What is one plus 3" or "How many R's in strawberry" and he couldn't get past it. Guess he needs a gunsmith well versed in the Americans with Disabilities Act lol

I'm assuming you need to take the barrel off the upper to do the work you're going to do

Is the barrel bedded to the upper where it would take a bunch of work to get off, or will it just pull out like a normal barrel?

if you could pull the gas block off the barrel and the barrel off the upper using just your hands I'd consider it disassembled and I'd consider you the asshole, if that's not the case - then yes he's the asshole.

Send that shit back and block him as a customer.

1000%

And what are the odds that that customer will expect that complete upper reassembled to his -loose- standard, and potentially try to hold adco responsible if anything isn’t exactly the way he wants it back when he opens the box?

Pretty fucking high if you ask me.
