But if they dont have 20 mph of wind so they can cruise along at 30 mph forward they still need the air speed to be right. So they normally have the power to go fast enough to launch airplanes when there is not wind. I was once told that the USS George Washington could get up enough speed to launch aircraft even with a 15 knot tail wind. |
