I don't know if you've seen the movie "The Road", but TSHTF (never disclosed how or why). All of the characters are unnamed. The main character, Man, has a son, Boy. they need to leave their bug-in location and bug out. Man has 2 rounds left for one gun, so he can take out himself and his son in case the bad guys out there are going to do bad things to them. I'm guessing that over the years, he used all his rounds taking care of bad guys.

Put yourself in his situation. You've made it 10 years, but you've spent all but 2 rounds of ammo in a single caliber. You're out of everything except body odor and lice, so you have to move. What caliber is it, and what gun is it? What is the last gun you would bet your life on?

Side question. Would you carry empty guns with you in case you find more ammo along the way? What gun/caliber?

By rounds I'm assuming you mean self contained cartridges and not homemade black powder and cast lead ball so... probably 10.4×38mmR would have to be my last ditch.

Figured this being arfcom, the obvious answer is 5.56 AR-15.

Actually, bp guns are a good example. Not the first thing you'd grab to go after hostile, but it may be the last thing you have left.

You would think so, but I think that would be high on the list of the first to run out. There will be plenty of hostiles around at first, and that would be where AR people would spend them the most. But once you've expended all of your "go-to" ammo, and get down to your "last ditch" ammo, what do you have?

There is really no chance that I expend all of my ammo before I die, but if I did, my last 2 rounds would probably be .22LR.

Actually it's the opposite there is a lot more 5.56 mm out there than any other caliber.

If the military goes to another caliber that will change.

I'd definitely take the AR15 over any other rifle. In a fire fight a rifle beats a pistol and a shotgun.

Any 556 bolt action.

I can scrounge brass and use primers from 9mm and .357 and bullets from .22LR and make workable ammo in a garage with a vise, or hammer and pin punch.

I'd have 5.56 and 9mm on me at the start.  Where one would end up?  Who knows.  I'm guessing my last two rounds would be 5.56

I wonder if some of you are hard headed, overconfident, have no imagination, or don't have a very deep gun and ammo collection.

Maybe it's not 10 years. Maybe it's 20. Whatever. You have expended all of your primary caliber. You had to move on to your secondary caliber, then your third, then your fourth, etc. You are down to a gun you thought you'd never have to bet your life on. You have to E&E to a distant place just for the chance to find more resources. The chance of you getting more ammo or even components is slim to none.

I don’t think I’d survive enough gunfights to burn my ammo fort down to just 2 rounds

Loaded 7k 9mm in the past two weeks just to have a little less variety of projectiles I have on hand.  Got a whole lot of 308 and 556 to do after that. And all of that is in addition to a bunch (many thousands) in the bins I pull to shoot from

I can see I'm in a no fun zone for the most part, so I'll say this. If I have almost expended every round I own, and that would take a lot, my last two rounds would probably be .38 S&W in a break action revolver. It's just the last gun and caliber that I would have left after I used every other viable caliber.

Primary 5.56 with a side of 9mm.
I’d switch to the secondary choice of caliber when I’m down to my last two 9mm so that those would be what I have stashed for a G19 as I burn through .40, .357 (sig and mag), .38, 10mm, .300blk, etc.

To the second question, I’d carry an empty AR, 12ga Pump, G19, in hopes of coming across ammo for any of them.

After 10-years of SHTF your primary home has long been burned. If youre still alive you might be a refugee in Canada or Mexico. Ammo forts get stolen or destroyed before they get used

No one should. My experiences with real SHTF scenarios around the world taught me that unless you have numbers on your side, eventually you’ll be limited to the gear you can discreetly carry.

When the mob comes for your gear they will burn you out if they cannot successfully take it from you.

Decades into a SHTF scenario I’m pretty sure the firearm you have will be your weakest link.  I mean in terms of reliability due to lack of maintenance and overall abuse it has taken.  This is why I would go with a revolver, 686 in .357.

@JJW11B

I’ll have gone through, in order:

1) 5.56
2) .308/7.62X51
3) 7.62X54r
4) 9mm Luger/9mm Makarov/.380ACP
5) .38 Special/.357 Magnum
6) .22LR
7) 12 ga
8) .30-30, British .303 and other miscellaneous calibers I don’t have a lot of.
9) Good factory 7.62X25
10) The very last would be two boxes of WWII era 7.62X25.  So that would be it.  2 rounds of iffy WWII 7.62X25 in a Tokarev pistol.

ETA:  Another edit.  I forgot all the 5.45 I have.  That would go after the .308.  Maybe before it.
