Article doesn't say if it had beans or not, but being that they called it chili, I'm going with it had beans. Because chili has beans. Also, suck it, Texas!

It's not chili. There's tomato sauce in it. Here's the recipe:

Ingredients
First set
2 lb tri-tip beef cubed (rinse & set aside)
1 finely diced hot pepper (deseeded)
¼ finely diced red bell pepper (deseeded)
1 finely diced small yellow onion
1-3 tbsp bacon grease

Second set
1 ½ cups water
8 oz tomato sauce
8 oz chicken broth
8 oz beef broth
6 oz red fresh chili sauce
1 cube chicken bouillon

Third set
6 tbsp Sucklebusters chili powder
4 oz can chopped mild green chilis
1 tsp apple cider vinegar
1 tsp concentrated aujus
½ tsp onion powder

Fourth set
4 tbsp Sucklebusters chili powder
1 float whole jalapeno pepper (poked)
1 tsp Cholula hot sauce
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp Mexican oregano
1 pkg Goya seasoning

Fifth set
1 tsp cumin (add 10 min before hand in)
1 tsp San Antonio red chili powder
½ tsp sugar
¼ tsp garlic powder

As needed
Salt
Hotness
Sweetness
Cumin

If you can't make chili with chili peppers, you're not making chili, you're only assembling something close to what chili is.

Tomato sauce and chili powder.....lol

Did you know tomato sauce is the #1 ingredient for hot-dog chili?

My mom put diced up potatoes along with beans in our chili since she was feeding herself, Dad and three growing boys.  Grandma had learned to cook during very lean times and passed on things to Mom with stretching meals.  I've got all of Moms and Grandmas old cook books.  I should go through them and see what chili recipes they have to see if they have any "add this to stretch it" notes.

Incorrect.  Prized chili article had link to recipe and it was in fact, chili rather than bean stew.

Looks like it’s been settled — chili, good prize-winning chili, does not have beans.

Nothing wrong with bean stew, it’s just not chili.

Is it true all the contestants from TX were disqualified because none of them had beans and therefore didn’t meet the minimum requirements to be called chili?

The largest contributor to chilies and its some commercial  powder.
Ingredients: Chile Powder, Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper, Cumin, Garlic, Mustard, Oregano and salt.

Not impressed. Pretty sad to enter a chili cook-off and can't be bothered to source whole dried peppers to make your own blend.
