The OP is a stand up guy. We certainly need more people like him in the country.

@OP well done

OP is reasonable, but it's not like he is gonna let them off Scot free.

Would they have some type of insurance to cover that?

That price seems incredibly steep.

They'd be crazy to involve insurance, their rates would go bonkers if they filed a claim for stuff like this.

Someone on the other page suggested Car-part.com, so I went and had a look.  I think they can get me taken care of for more like $7-800 instead of $1,400.

A guy tore off a mirror on our little car the Wife was driving.  A business owner's son driving a large PU going the opposite direction the Wife was going and crossed into her lane.  Don't know how he managed to take off the mirror without taking off the side, but he did.

In any case they paid for a new mirror and having it painted and installed.

That ain't too bad. I wouldn't replace it, just drive it. Like you said, it's a work truck.

This is prob what I'd do. They were honest about it, as long the thing adjusts and the glass isn't cracked I'd dye some JB Weld black and crawl it into the cracks and call it good.

Good on you.
Their may be a non oem aftermarket mirror available.
My wife washed he new Rav4 and didn't place the spayer in the holding tube and clip the hose to wall, pulled out, 'SNAP'.
I repaired it the FIRST time, ordered one from Amazon for FAR less than what the OEM cost after another Whhops, I did it again.....
Color matched perfectly and it fit fine, power functions are 100%.

They have insurance for shit like that.  Let them replace it

I expect to get my vehicle back in the same or better condition than I left it. New tires, detailed, serviced whatever is better than I left it. Sorry, I would insist on a new OE mirror.

So you're willing to fix a $1400 mirror out of your own pocket because someone else broke it?

Tell them to sell you the tires at cost, go to a junkyard and find a newish mirror

If you don't care, have them do a part locator for a used mirror

Maybe half it with them if you feel bad.

Honestly the price isn’t bad for the mirror for those saying it’s steep

This maybe high enough that they can submit an insurance claim.  I had a shop burn up the fuse box trying to get a ball joint off. I came up with a fair deal.  Too much for them, they submitted it to insurance and I got more.

Ask for half off on the tires if you don't mind the damage.

Based on your relationship and your input so far...

I'd tell them to hold a bit while "we" look for a replacement either local or online or ??
Like mentioned, perhaps a shell could be found.

Your call OP

Yes OP is one of the good guys. As far as that mirror if it still functions I’d just Gorilla tape it and move on.
My 2011 Outback is missing the entire front shell part on one mirror thanks to a hail storm. It still works just fine.

We came to an agreement, he’s going to fix my daughter’s car and we’re going to ignore the mirror.

If you want it fixed see about a junkyard part. There are online junkyard 'search engines' and many of the yards will ship the part. I can guarantee you it will be FAR less than the $1400 you're talking about and you can find a part that is in very good condition.

If you wanted to, you could get them to cover that cost vs the new cost.

I let a small shop off one time. They left my driver door open and lifted the car. The lift put a huge scratch/ dent on my door. They offered to pay for it but when I initially dropped the car off the shop key who I know told me his dad had just died in a skiing accident sonny Bono style the week before. I let it slide and eventually sold the car anyhow.
