I like it!

Get rid of the terrible wheels, super dumb roll bar, and of course get it in any color other than red and it would be awesome!

I got a chance to drive a new Gladiator last month, car rental company had a few on the lot so I tried one to the job site.  Overall, it's a Jeep, a bit quirky and not my cup of 4x4 tea, but people around here seemed to like them so to each its own IMO.

Yea, I could never get into the "Jeep thing" but most of my buddies that go off-roading have Gladiators that do pretty well stock.

Back on topic, I dig the new Frontier. Has some classic styling. I'm not a fan of the roll bar but I like what they are trying to do with the truck.

Sitting on top of the bodies of Tacomas that were scrapped because they frames turned to red powder the first time it rained.

Not from rain, from .gov coating roads with salt.

I bought a 12 year old Tacoma from Nevada, original frame is still perfect.

Pass, if I ever buy a truck newer than 2014-15 I'll go with the last year of Frontier before the update.

I think the Nissan is a solid choice , but when I was shopping around for a truck in 2021 and 2022 , similarly loaded up models of Nissan were only saving me $500 ish dollars over a Tacoma. To me that was not enough to swing me over to Nissan.

You also get a fully boxed frame, a V6 that isn't an anemic minivan engine, a transmission that can actually decide which gear to use, and an interior layout that looks like it wasn't designed by 10 different departments.

I've rented both the new gen Frontier and Tacoma on business trips and I still prefer the Frontier.

Nissan is targeting the demographic that wants what a Tacoma is supposed to be but aren't interested in paying the inflated prices for a truck that the Tacoma isn't

Nissan used to be a great choice for a small truck. Reliable, simple, and cheap
Now, they are smoking crack. Wanted me to pay msrp +3k. Screw that, you make a good truck but the Tacoma is better, more reliable and way better resale value

Kinda like it, just don’t want automatic. MY friend had an early 90’s, I had Toyota. He tried his damnest to kill it, redline burnouts constantly. Never could kill it. My Toyotas were awesome too, but I was easier on them.

The current Toyota 4x4 is absolutely hideous, ignorant and can’t believe people like them. Tacoma we’re the end of the yotas.

This is a pickup

As a previous owner of a 1986.5 Hardbody, let me just say it was quite possibly the best looking small pickup ever built and it was also a damn good truck that would go anywhere. I loved that truck.

I did a little poking and they brought back the #Murica livery too for a off-road truck. That would be awesome if they brought back the desert runner package.

Why are all truck beds like 5 plus feet high now? The OG Nissan you could reach over the side of the bed and grab shit. Now you need a ladder to access the beds from the outsides.

Mine looked just like the OG in the top right, but sans the grille guard and paint job. It had the same wheels, though.

3.0L V6
5spd manual
A/C
Crank windows
4x4
Flip down rear seats facing each other

Man, that was an awesome truck.

More reliable? Yes
Better resale value? Yes

Better?
No, they have never been "Better" unless your definition of better is also: more reliable.

Frontier has always had a stronger frame, better brakes, and a better engine, and more bed volume. A more comfortable seating position and a better ride.

But muh Tacoma

No. I want power everything, heated/cooled seats, and all the tech that you can stuff into one. But if I’m going to have a gutless little engine in a retro styled hardbody I want a manual trans for the full experience.

Website I was using had wrong numbers for Gladiator in 20 and 21, but I've seen a few others that back up what you are stating here so I'm inclined to agree with that assessment.

It should  be noted that 2022 was the first actual year the full Frontier redesign. 2020 and 2021 were kind of odd years where they did a powertrain refresh but kept the old body and interior. Given the apprehension of people who wanted new stuff not really wanting the old body style and the people who wanted more traditional equipment not really wanting a new powertrain I can see why those years flopped a bit.

Take a look at the prior three years of Frontier sales:

2017 74,360
2018 79,646
2019 72,369

That's a decent dip in sales for the refresh, even accounting for 'pandemic' supply chains.
